If Aretha Franklin isn't the cure to anything that could possibly ail you, I don't know what is. I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You has to be one of the best soul albums ever recorded.

I'd been meaning to get into this band for a while and this album hits the spot nicely.

Seam - Are You Driving Me Crazy? (1995)
A good album but doesn't seem as enjoyable as The Problem With Me. From first impressions it seems to have a more upbeat and straight-forward indie-rock sound and nothing in particular really stood out. Hopefully that will change with a few more listens.
Can someone get a "nail on the head"?

Headsparks is probably somewhere in between those two, it has a lot of good qualities to it ("Decatur" is stellar) but some dull and repetitive passages as well. The way I see it, Are You Driving Me Crazy? was a more direct attempt to pander to indie music fans. And it's not much of a surprise they kinda faded into the nether after that.

In many ways, Seam plays a more subtle version of the same hi-energy indie rock that was coming out of Chapel Hill at the time. After all, Mac McCaughan (of Superchunk & Merge Records fame) WAS part of Seam; I don't know how extensive his contributions were, but that may have contributed to the dynamics of The Problem With Me and Headsparks.

Death in Vegas - The Contino Sessions (1999)

I've seen this band name mentioned quite a few times in conjunction with trip-hop, so I figured it was about time I give them a try. It was a pretty enjoyable album, the guest vocalists like Iggy Pop and Bobby Gillespie were welcome surprises. Some of the longer psychedelic tracks did seem to go on longer than they should, but that's just something psychedelic rock and I don't see eye to eye on. While I don't think this album has made me a fan of the band, I will definitely keep it so I can use a track or two on a playist.

I was kind of put off downloading Headsparks because some people seem to have lukewarm views on it, but I probably will give it a listen sometime. I'm enjoying The Problem With Me quite a lot and I think it's a solid album. I still cant seem to get into Are You Driving Me Crazy? I has a couple of songs that seem better than the others but there's nothing really in particular that really grabs my attention. It sounds very generic 90's indie rock and is kind of disappointing compared to The Problem With Me.

Winter Forever - Seahaven

First LP from these guys, just came out today. Unbelievably good, I've been digging their first EP, "Ghost", since summer but this release just floored me. It's all the best aspects of 90s emo classics like Mineral and SDRE rolled up with catchy and driving modern pop punk sensibilities, all without ever sounding even remotely similar to any other "emo revival" band. DO NOT sit out on this band, they're gonna do big things.
