Awful cover and even worse album title (Hammer Of The North) but this is one of those rare albums that doesn't end up sounding like a parody of Heavy Metal or sound like squealing, operatic Power Metal claptrap.

Instead it is a damn solid straight up Metal album that would appeal to fans of Maiden, Dio, later Sabbath, Judas Priest and King Diamond (minus the vocals) etc. Very decent and very 80's :)

2010 was a pretty good year for that traditional heavy metal revival. Grand Magus there was:

Ghost - Opus Eponymous
Slough Feg - The Animal Spirits
Accept - Blood of Nations
Charred Walls of the Damned - Charred Walls of the Damned

Those were just the ones I could think of off the top of my head, I'm sure there were more.

Saint Etienne - Foxbase Alpha (1991)
A band I've been meaning to get into for quite some time now. I'm loving the sound of this; dreamy, electronic pop songs sit alongside dance numbers and experimental, trippy instrumental pieces. Unfortunately I could only seem find a 128kbps rip but if anyone has a link to a better quality one that would be brilliant.

The Drones - Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By (2005)
Aha now I see, there's more than one band called The Drones. I've heard a couple of tracks by the British post-punk Drones before and I thought it was that band. Anyway this the Australian indie band The Drones and is the next album going to be discussed in the Indie and Alternative Album Club so I decided to check it out. Will give my report then.

an interesting combination of harsh power electronics and EBM....very bombastic and beat driven....and very mean and noisy

Z'EV - Sum Things

Hooverphonic - The Magnificent Tree (2000)
Found a used copy of this on CD today for only €2.99. I was looking for more good trip-hop bands and this album fits the bill pretty damn well. The music has a very night-time mood, reminiscent of Portishead at times, but the key strength here is frontwoman Geike Arnaert's smooth and impressive vocals which add a nice warmth to the music. Great stuff. Whoever had the CD before me though seemed to have glued the entire booklet together, the twat.
