You can't tell me Tori Amos sang 'Me and a Gun' in a bid to entertain people.
But the rest of your post makes good sense. The way I read it, you were saying Pop music is like a foot in the door, giving the opportunity for people to see whats inside the room if they really want to. I can agree with that.

Ok, to the artist themselves, a given song or piece of music may have more meaning, but they put it out there for people to enjoy. To those that listen to it, it is entertainment. Even when a song makes you sad, or has sad memories attached to it, you still listen to it because you get some form of enjoyment out of it. You wouldn't listen if you didn't like.
Hobojesus, you're in for a hard time in the real world. How successful you are has little to do with how good you are, and more to do with who you know and how determined you are to be successful. That's the way the world works. Fair enough you don't like pop, but others do, is there anything so wrong in that?
