I can understand why you think Ashlee Simpson etc aren't good, i don't think theyre good either, but pop ain't all that bad. The Smiths, The Cure, New Order, Super Furry Animals, Blur, the list goes on, they've all written bloody amazing, catchy pop songs. Theres no point taking a whole genre and saying its rubbish.

Yes, I'm not really talking about those though. There should be 2 different genres-that for Ashlee Simpson and the rest of those talentess hoebags, and then one for Blur, The Smiths etc. From now on if I say Pop is **** just no I'm talking about the former category.

And yes I know this is musical snobbishness. But to be honest, I don't care.

^^ Theres pop and then theres pop.

It's because mainstream pop music by the likes of artists such as Britney, Simpson, Aguilera etc etc have been writing the same songs of eather love or broken hearts for over 20 years. It's all they can do to sell, well that and lots of makeup. There is slim to fuck effort involved in this music, yet it gets all the attention while a million other bands, you know, the ones that actually make an effort, starve from the attention they don't get, but actually work to earn.

It's fine to like it, fine to enjoy it, we don't really give a shit. But don't act as if you don't know why people have no respect for it.

And that reminds me-miming. In my opinion miming should be against the law. They can just get away with performing in a concert that people have paid money to see and lip synch through it. That's not what music is about. For how much these supposed 'artists' get paid, you would expect them to do it properly and not rip off their fans. The reason they do it is because if they performed live they wouldn't be able to have none of the technical wizardry that makes them sound at least average in the recording studio. If they can't sing without the help of a magical machine then they shouldn't be in the business, like Merkaba said, taking up attention that real bands could have.

It`s because half this forum is made up of teenagers still going through their rebellious phase. The type of person who thinks if it`s not metal/emo/punk/rock then it must be rubbish.

Pop has always been disposable , thats it`s nature. There`s no use complaining about it. The way that your average classic rock fan looks down on someone like Shakira is no different to the way that jazz snobs looked down on people like Elvis in the 1950s.Pop isn`t meant to last, thats why fashions in pop come & go so quickly. It`s not meant to be deep , it`s not meant to be clever. It`s about having a good time for 3 minutes in the present day and then forgetting about it.
I like pop & quite honestly I don`t care what anyone says.

I can see your point to some degree, but did you just compare Elvis Presley to Shakira?

And if you consider me a classic rock elitist, then fine... Though i listen to a lot of modern music, Brian Wilson qualifies as pop, right?.. Ok... He's not that modern.

But seriously, i find new bands all the time (Sigur Ros, Mars Volta, Arcade Fire, etc)... I'm just a sucker for old stuff, thats all... Though a real classic rock fan would be someone who likes Journey.

Ewwwww.

Thing is, i just find nothing redeeming about her music, i'm sure you'll find that funny coming from a guy who likes a bunch of old fart bands everyone here hates... But meh, if i want to listen to some enjoyable pop.... I'll play some Todd Rundgren instead.
