This link has the explanation and more or less matches your suggestion, but if you ask me the whole thing is rather confusing, especially with all the reissues of the album. Anybody getting this album should get one of the reissues, its a matter of opinion about which one though.

The yellow cover version is actually the US cover whereas the dark cover is the UK and international cover, now thats straight-forward enough.
