This one is very close for me. I prefer the Sonics' Boom over the debut, and if it replaced Here are the Sonics!!!, Boom would win in a landslide.
BUT!! That's not the battle. So... While both come from garage rock roots, they took two very different paths. The Sonics represent the final evolution of Seattle's garage rock scene and maybe the first punk band. While the Monks added added extreme degrees of minimalism and avant-garde that connect them in someways to 70' Krautrock. For me, Black Monk Time is an amazing album and amazing it was even recorded, considering the total lack melody and complete focus on rhythm. But, the energy and power the Sonics have is incredible. Here are the Sonics has an amazing drum sound (considering it's actually just one microphone) and the correct mix of thumping anger, and catchy melody that make garage rock so much more appealing than straight up punk rock (at least for me). The Monks 0 The Sonics 2 And, here are some videos to help out some decision making: The Monks The Sonics Last edited by Electrophonic Tonic; 08-06-2011 at 01:48 PM. |

Listened to the Monks album and sure it was wild for the era, but its not as complete sounding as the Sonics album is. I`m not a huge fan of bands that do a lot of cover songs, but the Sonics dis it well and added real energy to their covers.

ok, just got both again
The Sonics aw, you have got to be kidding me - this is just like a jumped Dave Clark 5, nothing proto-punk about this, adding fuzz to the guitars and playing at breakneck speed doesn't make you "punk" The Monks this is more like it - reminiscent of the Nuggets garage bands, there is some cool experimentation, and overall, the structure of the songs are much better than the above so:- Monks - 4 Sonics - 5 |

The Sonics scrape that one 5-4. Next up courtesy of Electrophonic Tonic sitting up there in the twilight zone are these two acclaimed modern day hip-hop albums. Take a few lines explaining your choice when voting.
