Ok. The mighty Zeppelin pwn this one.

Since I have no requests this is another matchup of my own creation.

1979 New Wave edition.

Fear of Music by Talking Heads

vs

Drums and Wires by XTC

Sure, there are those kids who get stuck in that time frame growing up. As Stunt would say, this is a phase. You've all seen those kids. In 2010 and they list the Beatles, Zeppeling, and The Pink Floyd as their favorite acts. Most of them are 16.

But I firmly believe you can mine the Metallica vein, especially those first 5 albums and fine an endless sea of inspiration. Its not just big riffs, or drum solos, or freaky experimentation. (i'll skip lyrics since I don't think either band was that great).

Metallica knew music, as musicians they are nearly unrivaled by many bands out there today. Are there more technical or poppy bands, of course there are. But they came as close to that Classical appearl - highly techinical and aurally pleasing - as any other band could hope to.

When you hear the breakdown in Master of Puppets, or the Classical lead-in's to Eye of the Beholder; the dissonant solos in Trapped Under Ice, i think most can understand that they're dealing with masters of their craft, people who never stopped working for the best a song could be.

Have they experiemented lately? Sure. Its not been my most favorite of their works but truth be told its nothing Zeppelin didn't do. Either way, I've found more in those musical interludes in Metallica music than I'd find in most other music. And I say this as someone who isn't your average metal fan.
Most of everything Zeppelin had ever been accused of stealing was lyrics which you admit isn't their strong point anyway. That or vocal melodies.

The only stolen Page riff I can think of is Moby Dick taken from a Bobby Parker song that every band in the 60s ripped off at some point anyway.

Even the uncredited covers have completely different arrangements and new riffs. Yes not giving credit to songwriters was a ballsack move which for the most part they have corrected anyway.

Metallica has been accused of plagiarism too as have most rock bands, so I don't get why Zeppelin are always the big target for this especially when they're so influenced by a genre where straight up taking stuff was done all the time and perfectly acceptable. They're a hugely popular band and people just delight in picking on those and making excuses for everyone else that happens to be guilty of the same thing.

Also I take offense to your comment on Zeppelin being nothing more than a band for 16 year olds because they have many loyal fans and they have never pissed off and alienated their fans to the degree that Metallica has, they were way better musicians and more experimental but what matters most to me is that they just made better music plain and simple, and a much more consistant discography.

I agree with the guy who says that the "we're not pussies" mentality can lose it's appeal over time and they don't sound as authentic in their intensity as say Slayer or even Pantera. These were both right of passage bands for me but I still enjoy Zeppelin til the day while I haven't really listened to Metallica in forever because I think there are better bands in their genre, not to say they didn't have some great stuff, they do. But Zep has aged far better for me.

I think I'm gonna go with Drums and Wires but it's not an easy choice.

Talking Heads because I've heard "Psycho Killer" before and it was a good song. Is that one on here?

No it's not. That is on their debut album Talking Heads 77, which is definitely one of their best albums and comes highly recommended.

So is Fear of Music.

Hmm I do enjoy some Talking Heads but have never listened to XTC. Some research may be needed.
