I think they've done 3 great albums, 2 average albums and 1 really sh*tty one.

Morning View
Science
Make Yourself

Crow Left of the Murder
Fungus Amongus

Light Grenades

They were hella tight up until Dirk Lance left, their new bassist ain't bad, but a big part of what made their sound work for me is now gone.

Still, the top 3 albums alone makes them one of my favorite bands from recent times.

There was a time when I think the band and the man were actually overrated. Now I'd say they're pretty accurately rated.

The Rev's a god-like rockabilly guitar player, but I just don't like listening to his albums.

I gotta put forward Australia's Go Betweens as one hell of an underrated band... not a single bad track in their entire back catalogue, some of their music is heart breakingly good... criminally overlooked band with amazing songs in their canon... R.I.P McLennan...

Are you on a Go-Betweens kick? Though I actually agree with about them being underrated. I was listening to Spring Hill Fair today I and I was reminded how much I love this band.

Tiger Trap (twee pop with equal charm and better guitars than Beat Happening)
Thinking Plague (one of the best and most disciplined atonal rock bands ever)
Boredoms (I know they are well-known but still....should be the biggest band in the world!)
Seefeel (ahead-of-their-time electronic music adventurers of the early-to-mid-'90s)
Esoteric (the best funeral doom band of all time, much > Skepticism, Thergothon etc.)

Those are the main ones that came to mind for me.

EDIT: I think the Go-Betweens are pretty well-known and respected. When I first learned about the history of indie pop they were one of the first names I encountered. Still a great band though.

Love Tiger Trap and do feel they're underrated though I still prefer Beat Happening, which brings up that I feel The Halo Benders, the side project of Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening and Doug Martsch of Built To Spill, was/is a very underrated band.

Oh yeah I think Tiger Trap and Beat Happening are about equal overall, but I think Tiger Trap had a better guitar tone.
