That's what overrated and underrated means.

Because I think those bands you listed are horrible, I consider them appropriately rated.

But because Incubus are one of my favorite bands and they're universally despised by everyone, including every other goddamn member of this forum, then of course I have the right to say they're underrated.
this is your problem, YOUR criteria clearly sets Incubus at NOT being underrated.

the dominating popular opinion about Incubus is positive.

How?

They're a mainstream band that people love to hate.

And absolutely not, critical reception of the band is generally negative or impartial.

Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender,Pitchfork, you name it, they sh*t on them on a regular basis.

On internet communities like this one it's even worse.

once again, that's not popular opinion. you clearly haven't been in this universe in a while. MBers may not like Incubus, but we're not a good approximation of popular identity.

they continue to headline festivals, they've been in constant repeat in mainstream radio for almost a decade, they've got over a million listeners on last.FM, what more evidence do you need?

Not at all... They're a semi-mainstream band that gets played out the wazoo by almost every 16-24 year old American male.

I never said they didn't have a following.

Yeah, but so has Journey, when was the last time you met a fan of them that wasn't over 50?

All that proves is that horny teenage girls and drunk frat boys have better taste than you do.

LS's taste has nothing to do with this though. The point is A LOT of people like Incubus. If you want to make the argument that they are underrated by the people on this site go ahead, but to say that they are completely underrated is outrageous.

I just don't know a lot of fans, especially on the internet, I've been to a dozen or so sites where Incubus were always a very hated band.

And that's generally more what I had in mind when calling them underrated.

Gee. I can't believe all the ribble rabble over calling one band underrated. As if that's really gonna convince me I'm wrong.

I would say Incubus are underrated and this is why. Yes, they are a huge well-known band with an enormous fan-base. But when it comes to evaluating them on a musical level (such a forums such as this), they don't get much notice. They're just thought of one of those successful bands the same as all the others, when they musically they have a lot of uniqueness to bring to the table.

No one is grouping them in with the Nickelbacks and Fall Out Boy's though. They're a well known band that does some neat things from time to time, but in their almost 20 year career they've released 1 or 2 "good" albums and a lot more mediocre and bad albums. Their new stuff is almost as bad as Stadium Arcadium.

Yeah this is true. Considering how long they've been around they have released a lot of mediocre stuff. Their newer stuff isn't very good but I think lots of their older stuff is underrated. They're also probably not what I would call one of the "most underrated bands ever"... I just think they have done some pretty good stuff, even if it's in small amounts, and that it doesn't always get much credit.
