okay, i know a lot of you havent heard of Malmsteen, but he does rank as the best, I dont rank Hendrix as the best soloist, nowhere near. Neither do i put clapton up there... I go for melody mainly, not speed, but malmsteen has both, hendrix has neither... it's incoherent and messy most of the time, although, i will admit - some of the stuff is excellent... Paige has perfect melodies. Van halen has the speed...
