I bet you ten million dollars he could be shredding right there, or playing some old blues licks. But, he does not, because he actually uses his instrument to achieve a unique aesthetic, and has been doing this since the 1970s. That's why I say he's a contender for 'best guitarist'. Because he sees past the Halen-ish 'dee-da-le-dee-da-lee' style of playing, and represents a form that is practically unheard of before him.

It's an opinion.....
When I clicked on that first video, I had to stop it after ten seconds because it was just that side splittingly hilarious. He thrashed and he plonked and I doubt discord of it's equal has ever been heard. It just seemed so fundamentally opposed to all that my brain considers art, and I can't help but wonder if he just keeps getting offers to perform merely because of his comedy value. That's just my opinion, you can feel perfectly free to consider him better than Eric Clapton if you wish. Just don't be offended when I don't invite him to play at my birthday party! (He's still 10000 times better than Johnny Buckland [Coldplay guitarist]) |

EXACTLY! He's expressive, and his expression is nihilistic anger, and disdain. Much more entertaining thank Eric Clapton's 'Hey, I'm a white guy, and I have no feeling in my playing, but I really liked the blues, and can somewhat imitate it' style. Haino brings real emotion to his guitar work, and that's something that solo guitarists solely lack.
Not only that, but he does it well. He'll play something ****ed up with 'improper' technique, but his vocabulary of 'improper' technique is unparalleled. Clapton may know the blues technique, but has 0% feeling. Haino's guitar work gives legit distress to the instrument, therefore validating it as a tool that stretches beyond 'notes and chords', and exposes the listener to true compelling emotion. Clapton presents 100% of the technique of blues guitarists like Robert Johnson who pioneered the instrument, and 0% the emotion. Haino presents 0% the technique and 100% the emotion. Keiji Haino, and his guitar alone, can mesmerize me with his strange technique, clever feedback manipulating, and true raw heart, and emotion for an hour. Yet someone like Vai puts me to sleep in 5 minutes with his dull, stenciled in, robotic duplication of hand shapes. Lightning fast, but ultra-castrated doesn't always win, imo.

They both released an album at one point (Haino and Brotzmann)... Unfortunately, Haino only did the vocals (no guitar).
By the way, if you like Keiji Haino, you should look into Masayuki Takayanagi. From 1975 I actually recommend you look into this album... It's very textural free improvisation (kind of like AMMusic). And... here's my personal favorite with him collaborating with one of the best free jazz saxophone players to ever live. It was recorded in 1970. |

Eric Clapton imo doesn't present a 100% of the technique of Robert Johnson or even techniques from other early pioneer of the Blues. I'm not saying he's not well versed in the Blues from him learning the guitar from listening to the Blues. To me he took what he knew and developed his own style, it just seem to me he's more inclined to do his own thing then to faithfully reproduce a riff from some old Blues recording.

I wouldn't say Clapton has no feeling. He's not the best but he's pretty damn good. White men CAN PLAY the blues. Peter Green is a good example of it. Stevie Ray Vaughan is an even better example.
Haino sucks. There's no way you can convince me that he's good. One of the worst guitarists ive ever seen. I guess he's doing some kind of "abstract" thing that I am failing to see. He looks like a tweeked out schizophrenic with no idea of how to play. But I see what you're saying, he's doing his own thing. But quite frankly, its terrible IMO. |
