Yeah, John Petrucci is very talented. I recently bought some Dream Theater albums and their music and guitar work is pretty amazing.

No they are overated, how many threads do you see on best rhythm guitarists? They're extremely ignored and everyone immdeitly assume best guitarist means most amazing soloist nothing to do with rhythm guitarists. Same could be said for bassist its always the dude playing the solo that gets the attention ignore the bassist and rhythm guitarist. Even though without those a band doesn't sound as good as a band without a lead guitarist does.

Agree with Chet Atkins but I've never been bored by an Hendrix solo yet.

Most people who casually listen to music can't even pick out the bass line in a song. Rhythm guitar parts change a lot and aren't as defined as solos for the most part. I agree that Bass and Rhythm guitar players are just as important as lead, if not more so, but your average listener will probably better enjoy the solos and main riffs. It doesn't mean they're overrated, it just means that the average listener doesn't appreciate all aspects of a song.

More just the bassist and rhythm guitarists are underated.
