Ah well, if you don't like the style, you don't like it. Now imagine fifteen years in the future that the people who are currently toddlers decide that Dizzee Rascal is some kind of indisputably classic artist and you'll understand where I'm coming from in those conversations we've had about groups like Soundgarden and Smashing Pumpkins. :)

He will be forgotten in 15 years. I hope. Plus The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the more decent bands from that era. Soundgarden are a bit boring though.

You never know who will be forgotten and who will be revered, that's my point. It's rarely what you think it will be. If you had asked me in 1995, I would've thought Soundgarden would be forgotten about by now and yet people a lot younger than myself talk about them as some kind of classic band.

True, I never thought Dizzee Rascal was as respected now as Soungarden were in the 90s though. I always though Dizzee was actually quite poorly received but I guess if people on this forum like him (you and someone else I've noticed held him in high enough regard) then he must be more liked than I thought. I just always thought of him as being just another one of them in the charts doing watered down mainstream Hip-hop.

I like Dizzee Rascal.

I think he's effing terrible, never thought anyone took him seriously.. This place never ceases to amaze me.

Well Pitchfork gave his first album a 9.4 out 10, NME gave it a 9 out of 10 and Robert Christgau gave it an A- so I'd say he was pretty well received, at least when he started out. As I mentioned before I'm only really into his earlier stuff, which was grimier. On his later stuff he sounds too much like he's trying to sound like an American rapper.

The point I was making to you really has nothing to do with Dizzee Rascal though, I was just using him as an example because he's someone fairly current who you don't like. There have been a bunch times that you have expressed surprise at me knocking bands or albums that you think of as classics. I was just making a point about the nature of those kinds of albums. At one time those Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, etc. albums were current and I wasn't into them. I'm still not into them but now they're considered classics by some people. I'm sure you'll have the same experience eventually, whether with Dizzee Rascal or with someone else, and it will be surreal for you then just like it's surreal for me now.

Well yeah.. I never thought he was well received as that, quite shocked really. I thought he was just shit and I actually thought he was considered average by the critics but he's actually respected, well he was anyway. So I can see the comparison now, someone well received that you don't get/don't like/think are crap in a few years becoming something special to people who are currently likkle. I dunno who I don't like in modern music at the moment that would be considered great in 15 years.. I'd like to prepare myself though. When my days of forum posting stop and if the day comes where I speak to/have kids/or whatever and they hold an album from the 00s that I hate in high regard, you'll be the first person I think of.
