I must admit that while I've really gotten into a fair share of his repertoire, I can't really say that he has an album where I find myself loving every single song. The closest ones I've found so far are Nighthawks at the Diner and Real Gone. I know that Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones seem to be his most acclaimed works, or at least most well-known. But there's certain tracks that tend to get on my nerves, or bore me.
I'm not dogging on Waits. I consider myself a big fan, and I definitely have a lot of respect for the guy. He's a true artist.

She dresses up like an egg from time to time. Its best not to take her seriously. We keep her around because she's cute.

I've grown to find Tom Waits' voice one of the most heart-wrenching and beautiful things I've ever heard. At first, yeah, it was a turn-off, but it grew on me in a big way. Tom Waits is amazing. Rain Dogs would easily go into my top 10 albums list. What's most amazing about Tom Waits, to me, is how insanely consistent he is along with how he's able to constantly reinvent himself.
His latest studio release, Orphans, was a triple album consisting of some re-recorded old stuff mixed in with some new material. A triple album of weird twisted blues and ballads being released by a dude in his 50's or 60's? It should've blown! And yet, it's got some of the best material of his career. From Closing Time to today, Tom Waits has never really lost his touch. I can't even make that claim about Bob Dylan, my favorite artist ever. I do think Bob Dylan's been more consistent over these past 50 years than people give him credit for, but in terms of sheer consistency, he doesn't touch Tom Waits.

Wow, Johnny, good post. I didn't even know he had another one out. Will someone refresh my memory of the one before that? Was it Rain Dogs that featured Claypool? Also, I've got to disagree with you guys. I don't think his voice is a turn off at first. It might be my female perspective, but I like the brash sound of his voice. It might have to do with the fact that from time to time, I like exposing myself to uncomfortable things. |

Though I don't REALLY know why I prefer these to most of his other material. I've never big on Blues, so songs that really have a blues feeling aren't for me. Couldn't tell you why. Cause I don't know. |
