yeah, cringe because some of his growls/howls or really scary voices, banging kind of production, but then he has songs in his catalog that are beautiful. like his early stuff or even later things like "hold on".

I guess I'm in the minority in that I pretty much only listen to pre-90's Tom Waits. I appreciate the direction he's gone in since then, but I just love classic crooner Tom.

I wouldn't say you're in the minority. Blue Valentine and Rain Dogs are my favourite Waits albums, and my favourite Waits songs are mostly pre-90's stuff also.

He took a slight political turn on Orphans with songs like "Road to Peace". How do you people feel about that? I can't say I like it. Most good music is apolitical, and what I like about Tom Waits is that he has in the past placed himself above such trivialities as politics.

I agree. I prefer it when he has takes the 'drunken musings across the bar' approach to politics, religion and such.

There's a free preview up on his website of the new live album, Glitter & Doom. Pretty good stuff.

The preview sounded sick from what I heard. Can't wait to listen to the entirety. Waits is one of the most consistent musicians of the day, ever since Closing Time.

I first bought Orphans, then Rain Dogs much later. Checked out Alice and didn't care much for it. Regardless, Last.FM claims he's my #7 most listened to artists with 544 plays. So yes, I'm a fan, and I do plan to check out swordfishtrombones..... eventually.

The latest Waits album I picked up was Bone Machine. I gotta say, I'm not a big fan of it so far. I'd have to say that the best track on it is Black Wings. I just really dig his softer-spoken tunes like "Jockey Full of Bourbon" and "Sins of the Father". I've checked out some videos of him playing "Jockey.." live these days, and he kind of butchers it by just howling away on it, and it even leads him to miss lines and timing. I'd hate to talk like this about Waits, but it's troof.
I do dig some of his howling and growling tunes, too. "Big Black Maria" and "Sixteen Shells From a Thirty-Ought-Six" are indisputable.

Also, I saw this band last night, and I think that anybody that's really into Waits would be able to dig these guys.

I'd have to say Bone Machine is my favorite from Tom Waits, just a really great album from start to finish. Guess he's got a little something for everyone eh.
