I've always been curious why Nighthawks gets rare praise.

It's a very transitional album. There are old school waits fans that dig the croony singer/songwriter and the new school fans who like the rhythmic performance poetry oriented portion of his later repetoire. Nighhawks kinda' has one foot in each pair of gulashes

Yeah, its a live album. Its new stuff but he also wasn't really reaching you know?

I mean its a great album, but its more of a fun album than it is ambitious. Its also a lot of poetry. I'd say of all the Waits albums its the most focused. Its a jazz album, and no other album fits one genre this well.

See, that's spoken like a true Waits fan; not meant as a good thing. I think his fans are very susceptible to letting parts of his discography color the rest.
As it's own piece, it stands alone as a fantastic concept album. As far as it being a live album, I guess technically it is. But at the same time it isn't. Waits perfectly used the audience as an instrument to create ambiance and did it in a studio.

Not meant as a compliment, eh? So its an insult then? Fair play, gloves off.

Spoken like a true debater, you don't know what the **** you're talking about. The problem around here is people take your answer as your opinion. More so in Current Events, but heres a case as well.

You asked why it didn't get high praise, and I told you why. As for me being a true waits fan, I will be taking that as a compliment. Shockingly enough, I'm going to bet I'm the first of the species you've met. It sounds you're bogged down with pretentious twats.

Hoboken I'm gunna guess?
