Closing Time, regardless of how mainstream it may sound, is an excellent record and one certainly worth listening to.

Nice one, Fasho! Another Waits convert!
In response to the Horned One (!) , yes I know what you mean, and by mainstream I didn't for a moment mean that any of Waits's music is ordinary, just that the albums mentioned would be easier for a noob coming fresh to Waits's unique sound to appreciate and get into, rather than starting with something like, say, Bone MAchine or Alice, or even the Black Rider. Mainstream is definitely NOT a word I would associate with Waits, and is used here only in the context of accessibility for those trying him out for the first time...

Funnily enough I was listening to a live version of 'eyeball kid' today. Man it kicks some serious ass.

I actually just picked up a double album of his, a sound board recording from his Glitter and Doom tour in Atlanta.
I haven't heard it yet but if all the clues add up, this is the concert they had broadcast over NPR which was mind blowing. He for whatever reason only toured across the south this time around and as I recall one rogue date in Seattle. Which you know, pissed me off but I guess I can understand why I wouldn't come up here if I were him.

OK, if we're talking Waits lyrics, the first I really heard and listened to, which knocked me sideways: "9th and Hennepin", from "Heartattack and Vine". An extract below. How does this guy do it???
"And all the rooms they smell like diesel And you take on the dreams of the ones who have slept here. And I'm lost in the window, and I hide in the stairway And I hang in the curtain, and I sleep in your hat... And no one brings anything small into a bar around here: They all started out with bad directions. And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear: One for every year he's away, she said. Such a crumbling beauty... Ah, there's nothin' wrong with her that a hundred dollars won't fix. She has that razor sadness that only gets worse With the clang and the thunder of the Southern Pacific going by..."
