I've been listening to alot of Blood Money lately. I think it's his most underrated album but also one of the best.

Well thats actually a pretty interesting position.
What albums would consider his underrated. I can only speak to personal preference on this one but I think albums like Foreign Affair and The Black Rider are far below Blood Money, but I think its also fair to say most fans wouldn't allow it to crack to top 10. I happen to think that its one of his better albums as well, with my only contention being that some songs are highly abbreviated. (something I'll chaulk up to it being a double release). Songs like "Another Man's Vine" which is likely my favorite is devoid of the traditional plot and character development that we've seen in other songs (even on the same album) but if Alice had words, Blood Money got the music. Like Maternal twins spliting the personality traits, one always gets the better hand. And when we say its underrated thats because its highlighting one of the most underrated talents waits has. His musicianship and his ability to conduct other musicians to play what he needs. I used to have a friend who said Paul Simon could never be as good as Dylan because he focused too much on the sounds of things. He suffered from the same issue I think most Singer/Songwriters fans do, and its an overappreciation for the word. And its a tough thing to say because the words of some of these guys are certainly worthy of the praise but to undersell the musicianship is nothing short of sinful. And thats exactly Blood Moneys problem. Its actually no problem, its just light on one aspect that too many fans over apprecaite and beautiful in too many ways people find incomplete. So whats your favorite track on the album?

I should say this now because it's probably going to be a reoccurring issue. I say every Tom Waits is album is underrated except Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs. My favorite song is Misery is the River of the World.

Well I've always thought Bone Machine was underrated. I find it to be up there with his best, though I doubt I've heard as much of his discography as some of the Waits fans here so I can't really judge.

I'm still missing quite a few albums, mostly the early bluesy ones. |

Here is a bad cell phone quality picture of my Tom Waits Vinyl Collection:
Closing Time, The Heart of Saturday Night, Nighthawks at the Diner, Small Change, Foreign Affairs, Blue Valentine, Heartattack and Vine, One From the Heart [with Crystal ***le], and Swordfishtrombones. I really need to find a coy of Rain Dogs, it seems to be Tom Waits' most popular album. Edit: G ay is censored? Really? That's pretty ridiculous. |
