Scarred for life

I did a search, and couldn't come up with anything that matched this topic. (maybe I just didn't use the right keywords, I don't know)

I was just curious if people would like to share the music they listen to that they heard growing up, coming from their parent's stereo.

What music do you enjoy because your parents enjoyed it?

For me, I know more Motown than any middle class, middle aged, white suburbanite should, because that is what my Mom loved.

I also own some John Denver, another favorite of my Mom.

Anyone else?

My parents were big on like all 80s new wave and some 80s pop. Sooo, I like Blondie, Wham!, Madonna, Cure and other such things quite a bit.

adidasss 04-09-2006 06:30 PM

my parents didn't/don't listen to music, my sister is however 12 years older and yes, she definetly scarred me for life with martika, jason donovan and kyle minogue and other 80's horror music....she did have some joe cocker (sp?)...that was rather good....

Smashing Pumpkins, REM, Marcy Playground, Pearl Jam, Green Day, The Offspring, Stone Temple Pilots... my dad basically introduced me to all 90's alternative music. Not that I wouldn't have heard it on my own, but listening to my dad play Mellon Collie in the car 24/7 for a few weeks definetely helped out my budding musical tastes.

It took me a while to realize that most of the stuff I used to think of as my "dad's music" was actually better than the crap I started listening to... like Papa Roach...

jazzfromhell 04-09-2006 07:58 PM

My parents listen to a ****load of Beatles, and some scraps of other good stuff. Some Eagles, although I'm only a semi-fan of them.

tdoc210 04-09-2006 08:22 PM

^ same with the beatles, and led zeppelin......the kinks, and of course pink floyd

jazzfromhell 04-09-2006 08:25 PM

Yeah, for most bands all my parents were able to do was reccomend them to me once I started listening to classic rock, since they had only had the records (most of which were lost/sold/etc.), and not CD's.

tdoc210 04-09-2006 08:28 PM

^ hah i own you i got a record player biznatch...sorry couldnt help it

jazzfromhell 04-09-2006 08:39 PM

Having a record player wasn't the problem, they only have a few of their records left in the first place...although I have now found myself a record player and a sizeable amount of records, anyway. :D

tdoc210 04-09-2006 08:48 PM

^ ERRRRR DIE..... jk jk anyways i have like 100 records

jazzfromhell 04-09-2006 09:04 PM

I think I have like 150-200 from my Grandma, once I get them all from her house (she basically forces anything of hers that I have interest in on me, not that I'm complaining. In fact, that's also where the record player itself came from), although those are basically all classical, some broadway mixed in. Then there's maybe 30 or so between my parents' and the few that I've bought. Player needs a new belt, though, and I still need to go get the receiver. Stupid technology, nothing works these days.

No music my parents played stuck with me.
The biggest influence on me was my eldest sister, she used to bring people round and listen to Soul music, our place was an open house back then and always busy.
Her friends were into Northern Soul (rare soul that never made it, from the smaller labels, such as Shrine, Okeh etc), they used to move the dining room table and practice dance moves on the kitchen lino.
It captivated me and the music has been with me ever since. It's a passion and an obsession.

I got my love for CCR, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles from grandma. :D

DearJenny 04-10-2006 06:08 AM

Country. Reba. Leann Rimes. Billy Ray Cyrus.

My mother listened to Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals.

My father listened to an "oldies and today" station which included everything from "sitting on the dock of the bay" to "Piano man" plus some new soft rock. I actually still listen to the station.

littleknowitall 04-10-2006 10:49 AM

my mum played me blondie in the womb and listened to stuff like maiden and bon jovi, jethro tull alot too and fleetwood mac, my dad liked pink floyd, the rolling stones, the eagles, black sabbath. i got into all of them. can't remember how i got into guns 'n' roses but someone introduced me to them at a young age too...

Health 04-10-2006 11:54 AM

My dad was into Metallica and Ozzy. I can remember blaring Metallica while driving to the lake in our topless Blazer, lmao. Good times.
And lots of Madonna and Blondie from my mom. Oh, and Kiss. My mom was a member of the Kiss Army half her life, haha.

holdyoualways 04-13-2006 12:36 PM

i basically grew up listening to two different types of music: 80s hair metal & country
i chose to like the 80s stuff considering its actually good
basically every hair band there was, i like

My mother was a total chart freak , she listened to anything.

One minute it was glam rock , then disco , then electropop, she also listens to a lot of classical & brass.
My dad was really into 50s rock n roll , but hated Elvis.

I think I must have been one of the few kids to grow up without a Led Zep , Stones , Beatles or Pink Floyd album in sight.

I`m glad I didn`t

I wouldn`t want to end up like the classic rock bores that pollute this forum.

I had exposure to everything when I was a kid , not just a bunch of dinosaur rock bands,

my dad influenced my tastes alot, he listened to punk and classic rock music. I listened to bands like the Clash, the Damned and the Buzzcocks, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, The Zombies etc growing up.

Jayman64 04-16-2006 01:20 PM

the doors

DearJenny 04-16-2006 01:57 PM

you're all lucky. I never really heard anything else besides country, old soft rock and musical songs until I consciously made the choice to listen to it later in life, like 8-12. Then I got introduced to hair metal, and 80s electronica and I love it all1

Slowhand 04-18-2006 05:44 PM

Creedence Clearwater Revival was my introduction to music since my dad was and still is a Fogerty freak.
