This is tough. I've seen some people include solo artists, so I'll do the same.

U.K.:

The Beatles
Sabbath
Pink Floyd
Zeppelin
Rolling Stones

U.S.:

Robert Johnson
T-bone Walker
Bob Dylan
Jimi Hendrix
Allman Brothers

Very many people putting Neil as American, Neil is Canadian.

So for that, I'll add a canadian list.

Canada:
The Band (except for the token American, Levon Helm)
Neil Young
Rush
Leonard Cohen
Joni Mitchell

4. Radiohead
5. Genesis

USA
1. The Doors

I'm not a bug US music listener so I had to add in a few solo artists as well for the Yanks.

take off eh... they're the best
Marty Willson-Piper was originally from Liverpool, England - that should account for something. I didn't want a list of bands just from England (maybe I should had mention the Rezillos) but anyway I took extreme liberties and and mentioned them, considering where they come from is a part of the Commonwealth.

British immigration into Aus is still fluid, but I don't think the Aussies would take too kindly to their best bands being classified as part of the Yooooooookay.
