I guess it would depend on how you would define great james, but I will take your word for it, I did a little research through wikipedia and most of the bands ^ listed are mentioned, except for the Damn Yankees and and a few other.

both countries have so many amazing bands, I'd need to think long and hard to come up with an informed response to this debate. and it's a sunny day, i'm tired after playing football ... so I'm just gonna say, Britain has The Fall, so it wins.

I have favourites on both sides. The Brits usually have more compelling melodies and floating atmospheres, while Americans are usually better at rocking, grooving, rhythm and generally jamming. My absolute favorite bands are actually from America, New York more specifically. I find that New York has the best from both worlds.
