Theres so much to say here.

@ Boo Boo - I can't believe you gave Metallica a nod, even if it was an 80's nod. And Oasis were great in the 90's I don't know where your hatred lies.

@Comus - Why is a local scene good? Consolodated groupthink ain't my cup o' tea. And we're clearly smoking the 00's. You know it as well as I do.

@cory - come on man, you can do better than that. Click through wikipedia or something.

A good local scene always manages to spread and influence the entire country, and if the scene is good, there will be enough variation to make every band stand out and be great. Look at the Canterbury style bands in the 70's. Soon enough it became a "sound" more than a scene, and such a massive amount of albums came from it. Same with the Black Metal scene in Norway once the influences of Bathory started spreading. Most of the bands there came from the same areas. Although let's not forget that Norway is around four and a half million people, so roughly the size of a metropolitan city in the US in regards to population.

If there was say a massive blues or jazz influenced scene in a large city or area in the US or the UK it could mean massive things for music. The style gets popular, is varied and spreads and eventually creates new and more experimental things, with luck anyways.

Also at the moment I like me a few American bands that are still active but about the same amount of British bands. However that number combined is dwarfed by artists from Scandinavia alone.

With the possible exception of blues rock I totally agree with all of this including the fact that Britain has an amazing number of fantastic bands for its size. I also think the you guys completely kick our ass in the goth, trip-hop and psychedelic departments.

I think beyond just krautrock, which I like a lot, Germany has been responsible for a ton of great music over the years. And yeah with out a doubt some amazing stuff from the Caribbean and the whole continent of Africa. Not to mention South America and Asia.

As far as this decade is concerned I believe it's too soon to call. In all honesty I've been fairly unimpressed with most of the new music that's has been produced during this decade. Most of the good music that's been produced in the 00's has been by artists who had already secured a strong foothold for themselves in the 90's or earlier. I have a funny feeling that in hindsight, which is always 20/20 w/ music, the 00's will yield more great music than the 90's and that it will probably go to the yanks, but not by much.

The brits have a hardcore scene? O_o

The one thing that we can't touch the brits on at all is prog, we had Zappa and now we have TMV and Tool but that's pretty much it for American prog, and Canada has Rush and Harmonium. Many of the biggest and best prog bands if not from the UK, come from other European countries like Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden. It's a very European thing.

You brits also put out a lot of quality electronica. Aphex Twin, The Orb, Massive Attack, etc. I think it's what you have excelled at the most for the 90s and 00s.

but isnt there Country & Hip hop scene not a massive has ours that alone should give us the NOD

Brit cant compete

Whooooa, British music is hardly at it zenith right now but it's not that bad. I happen to think we're producing quite a lot of good stuff, you need to delve in a bit further.

TBH to yall brits most amercians are not exposed to yall music scene because they dont show yall music over here on TV and we dont know any websites decaded to Brit music either at least i dont
