Name me one american band who matchs The Beatles in influence, impact, popularity, acclaim, and in overall musical importance.

Yes, but he's far more well known than they ever were. The average person on the street probably couldn't tell you who any of the other Rock & Roll pioneers are, but they know who Elvis is.

So that means hes had no influence whatsoever?

Britian can't win this on one band alone, sorry.

For you new guys, this is what we call an "MB Staple". Boo Boo has reposted something thats been said probably a dozen times on these boards, whats great about this one is, well two things:

1. His attention paid to unoriginality while being unoriginal himself

2. Its not germane to the topic. Originality was never something I said, nor was the original post.

Actually, elvis took far more from the blues artists (american) than anyone else, and that is some common knowledge its disgusting.

All of this is still irrelevent because Elvis and Bob Dylan account for everything we hear today (save for a fractional 5% maybe) by at most, a two degree seperation.

I have to agree, it was America who sparked the rock n roll scene. That is, their music drifted over to Britain and Britain built off of it. Arguably it was America who proved most influential towards making the Beatles what the were.

I don't want to make it seem like I hate British music, but the Pro-Brits are ardent in this thread and im making sure our side is heard.

It seems as if America originates a style of music and the British (for better or worse) warp it. You take that how you want, I'd say most of their spin on American stuff is rather good.

So you want to trace it all back to the beginning?...Fine, it all goes back to early blues and gospel music from black plantations, which can go all the way back to african folk music and european folk music, which can go way back to the days when caveman discovered they could make cool sounds from banging a bone against a rock.

Its true that Elvis and Dylan both influenced The Beatles, but The Beatles took all their influences and became something bigger, they are easly a top canidate for the most influencial and popular musical figures in history.

Sure you can say popularity dosent matter, and though that may be true when it comes to all the crap bands getting MTV play today, those bands are just fads, and there will come a time when nobody remembers who they were, being popular for a year or two is much different than having a significant amount of popularity and influence for over 5 decades...I dont care what anyone says, that certainly counts for something...And not as many bands TODAY credit Elvis as a influence, but many still point to The Beatles for inspiration.

Im merely trying to be objective about it, and you're getting pissed for no reason.

sleepy jack 03-20-2006 07:56 PM

So basically, britian is way better, because you think the beatles were way better then any other bands?
