Michael Hutchence (INXS) was the best singer before he toffed himself.

Chris Cornell's voice was described as 'alpha-male vocals' in a review I read once, which I think describes them pretty well. No great range or technique, just a good strong sound (and very manly apparently - I think the review was a smitten woman).
