I just don`t see anything special about this band whatsoever.

For some reason my previous post to Luke M has been deleted, but I would just like to say that whatever your opinion on The Beatles is, you can't deny their influence to music and their impact on the world in general. So, no matter if you like them or dislike them, you cannot argue with the FACT that they are one of the best bands to ever grace this Earth.

Im not saying DT arent progressive rock, in genre terms they are, just not in terms of their actual music, because they're simply not doing anything new, and after all thats what being progressive means, doing something new, at least in a certain sense...Its like how Green Day are a punk rock band, but they arent really punk...Simple way of putting it, i find Dream Theater to be a very overrated prog band, especialy when people say they are the best prog band today or that they are a top 10 prog band...Most of these people have barely listened to more than a dozen or so prog bands to start with...And they dont even understand the basic principles of being progressive rock. |

Ill agree that Dream Theater is hardly prog...some main things about prog are originality (like the mars volta) and it seems to me DT just picked up all kinda\s of things from other REAL prog bands and added virtuosos and whatnot

I think DT are pretty original, and although they are clearly influenced by 70s progressive bands, I can't think of any which have the same sound as Dream Theater.
Boo Boo said that they don't progress, but in my opinion all their albums are different from each other and unique. It's not as if their style remains the same all the time. I also don't see what's wrong with their lyrics. I think that Scenes From A Memory, for example, is interesting and thought provoking, and James La Brie is a very talented singer. |

Dream Theater are just a normal rock band with wanky musicians.
But they are the only band who can make me throw up just by seeing an album cover.

Instrumentaly, a lot of their stuff reminds me of Rush with a different singer...Plus they sound like Styx and Saga to me, and neither of those bands were top of the prog heap to begin with.

I just don`t see how a band who uses every cliche under the sun (Their song titles seriously make me piss myself laughing) can call themselves progressive.
I bet they even have amps that go up to 11.
