Bands You Love That Everyone Else Hates

I can't believe this isn't a thread yet.

We've all been there: you have your friends who don't listen or "get" the same bands you listen to and love so much. Ever tried justifying Neutral Milk Hotel, Captain Beefhart, Guided by Voices, No Age, Sun O))) and MuM without sounding like an idiot? Without them frowning at what they hear?

Share!

gunnels 06-06-2009 08:39 PM

EDIT:System of a Down, Coheed and Cambria, and Elton John are the big ones; but in some cases Queen, Rush, and At the Drive-In.

lucifer_sam 06-06-2009 08:47 PM

my friend used to make fun of Captain Beefheart until i explained to him that most of the crap he listens to (John Frusciante, Black Keys, White Stripes) cited Beefheart as an influence. considering i'm usually the one getting ridiculed for my taste in music i find it amusing when my friends are wrong 99% of the time.

boo boo 06-06-2009 08:49 PM

To be fair to your friends.

Thurtson Moore was influenced by Metal Machine Music, that doesn't mean all Sonic Youth fans have to like Metal Machine Music.

Does anybody.

It's probably the album with the most artistic merit in the history of rock music. No other album says 'FUCK YOU' like Metal Machine Music does.

Doesn't mean I'd want to listen to it though.

boo boo 06-06-2009 08:56 PM

For me, there's a lot.

ELP is the big one.

Also.

Incubus
Van Halen
The Police
Queen
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Eagles
Rush
Tool
The Mars Volta
Pantera

That thread hasn't had a post in three years though. I'm all for starting fresh.

crash_override 06-06-2009 08:58 PM

Rush defiantely comes to mind. I'm always sticking up for those guys.

Janszoon 06-06-2009 09:02 PM

I'm actually a pretty big Billy Idol fan and he's definitely not a guy who I think gets much respect from serious music fans.

Rush is good. I'm not a huge fan but I enjoy their music. My friends think I'm crazy! They actually record/rehearse at a studio that's pretty close to where I live, as they're from Toronto :D which earns them bonus points from me lol

Roygbiv 06-06-2009 09:05 PM

oh hai fellow Torontonian

I also really like Coldplay, but for some reason everyone I talk to hates their guts.

Except for the tens of millions of people who buy their albums of course.

Yeah canadian bands rarely get love from americans for some reason. Even if they're really good like Rush.

Haha, well I guess in my circles Coldplay isn't highly regarded for some reason.

Mine either, and by circle I mean this site and the internet in general.

Well, everyone does on my old forum.

I was their sole defender.

I gave up trying to post on DDD.

Pretty much 95% of the glam metal and eurodance bands I listen to.

Yeah I can see that.

YourLocalTyrant 06-08-2009 01:17 PM

I like They Might Be Giants alot.
However, it seems everyone around me in a good fifty mile radius of me hates them.

Coheed and Cambria is another band I like that doesn't get any respect around here

Antonio 06-08-2009 01:20 PM

Butthole Surfers........

jackhammer 06-08-2009 01:47 PM

Simply Red. Just because Mick Hucknall is a twat it doesn't detract from the fact that they have made some damn good music. I couldn't care less if no one likes them either.

Considering how it's not "cool" to like either genre, I guess you could.
