my friend used to make fun of Captain Beefheart until i explained to him that most of the crap he listens to (John Frusciante, Black Keys, White Stripes) cited Beefheart as an influence. considering i'm usually the one getting ridiculed for my taste in music i find it amusing when my friends are wrong 99% of the time.

To be fair to your friends.

Thurtson Moore was influenced by Metal Machine Music, that doesn't mean all Sonic Youth fans have to like Metal Machine Music.

Does anybody.

It's probably the album with the most artistic merit in the history of rock music. No other album says 'FUCK YOU' like Metal Machine Music does.

Doesn't mean I'd want to listen to it though.

For me, there's a lot.

ELP is the big one.

Also.

Incubus
Van Halen
The Police
Queen
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Eagles
Rush
Tool
The Mars Volta
Pantera

I'm actually a pretty big Billy Idol fan and he's definitely not a guy who I think gets much respect from serious music fans.
