Sia - Breathe

Sad on its own, and ever sadder if you watched SFU over the years.. it played during the last 4 minutes of the show, very sad.

I've quite enjoyed reading through this thread as quite a few songs bring a tear to my eye.
What makes a song sad? Does it evoke a nostalgic memory of happier days? remind you of a lost love, or does it just push your sad button. Irrespective of the reason why a song makes you feel sad or even cry, the song becomes more powerful due to its ability to pull your heartstrings?
I'm sure, like me, that there are many tunes that are special to you for whatever reason that produce no emotion other than a "yeah it's alright I suppose" from others
Here's a list of sad songs I found on my MP3 player and a some suggested by my daughter when she found out what I was doing.

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Clarence carter - Patch
The Who - real good looking boy
Lost cause - Beck
New Song - the Christmas Shoes
The Bee Gees - I've gotta get a message to you.
2 little boys - Rolf Harris (suggested by my daughter)
Chocolate Genius - My Mom
Iron and Wine - Naked as we came
Pernice Brothers - Chicken wire
Commodores - 3 times a lady
Roy Orbison - In the real world
Billie Holliday - Gloomy Sunday
Wondrous stories - yes.

Haven't read through all of the thread, but has anyone mentioned Dolly Parton's "Me and Little Andy"? What a tearjerker.

Sarah McLachlan's "Angel' is rather sad and gloomy- but there's also a strange, beautiful quality to it.
