Default Which Band/Artist Came Out Of Your Town?

Was there a music artist or band that came from your town or community that later went on to become well-known? Tell your memories of them before they made it big....did you see them play the local clubs...did you go to school with them...do they ever come back to their beginnings, their roots? Do they "give back" to their community in any way?

Though I never had a chance to see him, Dave Matthews is from Charlottesville, Virginia. And Missy Elliot came from Portsmouth, Virginia. Perhaps lesser known, is Robbin Thompson of Richmond, Virginia who co-wrote "Sweet Virginia Breeze" with Steve Bassett, which became a finalist in the Virginia State Song contest.

As I grew up in Manchester, England, I think there were a few. The one band that actually meant anything to me or influenced me though were James. I didn't get to see them before they 'made it' unfortunately as I was only just old enough for concert going when they became well known.

I don't know about giving back to their community but they put on a brilliant show when they play their home town. I've been to see them twice and one time in particular they were playing songs off their very earliest album and the crowd was going absolutely wild. Their music is fantastic.

Of course, there was also Oasis more recently, who I really liked at the time. I went to see them too, but couldn't get tickets when they played Maine Road and ended up going to see them at Balloch Castle in Scotland. It was a fab day especially as I got right in the crush in the front row, but probably not the same as seeing them in Manchester. I wasn't really a fan until they were already famous though.

Still I'm quite proud of the musicians that have come from my area, I mean if we expanded it out into the north-west the Beatles only came from just up the road from me in Liverpool! And of course how much more inspirational could you get.

The Early November and Goo Goo dolls are two of my favorite bands, they came out of Buffalo NY. NFG is from Coral Springs, which is close to me.

Not sure if any of you have heard of The Nadas, but they're from the Des Moines area. They're really big regionally in the Midwest, anyways.

Birmingham gave to the world Black Sabbath, the Moody Blues, ELO, Duran Duran, Traffic, Steve Winwood, Joan Armtrading, Ocean Colour Scene, Napalm Death, The Streets, and we were the only city in the Midlands that would allow Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham into our clubs, as he was deemed too loud everywhere else. Birmingham was also where Robert Plant and Bonham got their first breaks in the music business before being introduced to Jimmy Page, and the rest of their story, is indeed, history.

There's also a great underground scene again, with the metal and pop punk stars of the future hopefully playing the pubs and clubs now. My personal favourites are Distophia who play quite a sugary punk-lite sound, and Afterburn, who rock in an AC/DC style.

Well, lots of people from "around" my town, but actually from Virginia Beach the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Pharrell and Chad from N.E.R.D and The Neptunes
