RT - I have an old photo that is an original. It was taken to be published in a newspaper about an Event I was lucky enough to be present at. There are about 12 Djs on it, and all were well-known at the time. Could I post it on here as I'm wondering if you would recognise anyone on it? I know who some of them are, but not all.
Depends on how well known they were and when the photo was taken.
Post it and I'll have a go.

Uh Oh...you got me here.
The one on the far right looks a bit like Kev Roberts with glasses.
I'd be guessing if I said it was Richard Searling holding the mike.
The black guy, Mike Shaft???

Where and when was this taken barbarella?
Who are the ones you know?

Have I got you thinking! Lol!
Yeh you're right, it is Mike Shaft, and he's still working I'm pretty certain. The ones I know are- Simon Barton-Bates and Dave Faulkner (front row, left and centre).
Back row- Mike Shaft, Pete Smith, Steve Reno, Ed Simons, Jonnie Owen, Daryl Jay, ( L>R all in a line, the two at either end I don't know.)
As far as I can remember- Dave Faulkner also worked as an extra on "Coronation Street".
Daryl Jay was Head of The Manchester DJ Association at the time.
Simon B/B knew the lead singer of The Olympic Runners and he was there as well.
Sad Cafe made a personal appearance.
Pete Smith may have been working at Rafters.
I knew quite a few of these guys personally and went home loaded with free promotional gear lol! As for the year, there are clues in the photo but I'm not putting it on here! It was taken at Tiffany's in Manchester- I sort of used to live in there!

haha...being cagey with the years hey?

I was expecting a photo packed with more familiar faces. Russ Winstanley, Ian Levine, Keith Minshull, Dave Evison etc. etc.

Now Sad Cafe must have been worth seeing?

Probably a different mix of DJs, I'm not sure who the older guy was,but I know he did bits on Corry as well. I know the names Russ Winstanley and Dave Evison but who were they? Sad Cafe were brilliant, altho' the lead singer was so drunk he had trouble standing up!

Russ Winstanley was a top DJ at the Casino and had/has a regular spot on GMR radio.
Dave Evison, another Wigan regular DJ with a massive soul collection worth hundreds of thousands of quids.

My favourite DJ Richard Searling is still worth listening to and he still does a spot on SmoothFM.

Mary Fox has a good programme too on BBC Stoke, which is a mix of Northern and Motown.
^ You can hear it online with Real Player.

Thanx RT - Now I know where I've heard those names. I think there are a lot of guys who were so good at their craft, and so hooked on it, that they're still around even now,(I can think of a few) and there are still plenty of people to appreciate what they do. I do miss the Club Scene very much, maybe because I was pretty involved in it -one mate was a DJ at Pips in Manchester, and also because I'm still a Dance Freak even now!
Thanx for the suggestions, I'll give these a listen!

I would guess that photo was from early 1977 judging by the clobber alone.

I must admit that I thought Right Track would have commented on my upload of Northern to introduce people to the genre. My guess is that the selection is not traditional enough for him as there is too much "modern" stuff included.

Not at all. I thought it was a great mix.
The reason why I didn't comment was because I've been here since 2005 and in all that time, virtually nobody with a love of Northern Soul has visited these boards.
The few that have only stayed for a short time.
Recently though, what with you barbarella, Molocules and Bulldog there's never been so many here.
What I didn't want to do was come across as some kind of forum expert so I left you to it. If that makes any sense?
