A discussion began yesterday on reddit's Let's Talk Music sub with the headline, "How Long Can Last.fm last?"
Users cited the decreasing number of applications supporting scrobbling, as well as CBS Corp (Last.fm's parent company)'s recorded a loss of £2.1 million ($3.4 million) in 2013 for their Last.fm division. Still, Last.fm remains the longest-standing global music analytics engine (as demonstrated by this very thread which began in 2004.) The data visualization plugins are fantastic and the recommendation tools provide a great service to the listening community. Personally, I'm still dreaming of an IMPORT plugin which can add all the tracks from my digital library in one fell swoop. (I'll keep dreaming!) Where does MusicBanter stand on the question of its longevity? |

Q3 of 2014 officially marked the replacement of television with mobile devices as "America's First Screen," marking the economic shift from the PC and WWW to the app market. I'd be interested to see what mobile applications are replacing traditional desktop media software like MediaMonkey Gold and Foobar2000. I can speak only for myself - I use Subsonic as a mobile access point for my home media server. While I understand this will likely never become the norm, it is a wonderful solution for my personal circumstance. (And yes - it supports scrobbling.) I'd love to hear how other MB users consume their media with scrobbling support in the mobile environment. Last edited by innerspaceboy; 02-14-2015 at 12:35 PM. |
