For some reason, these bands are always mentioned together. They're like the holy trinity of almost-mainstream-70's-prog.

Don't forget Steve Hillage of Gong :P

I think of Van der Graaf more from '68 to '73 mostly, though they carried on. I think of Gentle Giant as a late 70s band all the way. And the Ozrics formed in '83 and didn't have much but demos and EPs until the beginning of the 90s. (Erpsongs is still great) They released 10+ excellent albums from the 90s on.

Love em all. Came to them a bit separately.

Ozrics first. Heard their massive discography so many times it's as if I made up for all the years of my life I hadn't known of them. (They're third place overall on my last.fm with 2900 something plays)

Van der Graaf soon after, but through King Crimson and etc.

And I got into Gentle Giant most recently. Some time earlier this year I started to really get it and love it.

Very different bands, as well. Gentle Giant is the middle ground between VdGG and Ozrics.

Edit:

*stoner realizes after post almost for the first time that his avatar is an Ozrics cover and wants to mention it*

Oh, right on, my mistake. I've only listened to one Gentle Giant album and two VDGG albums, and I never much payed attention to the date, but they both sounded very 70's prog to me. And I always see Ozric mentioned in prog-related discussions, so I figured they all came from about the same period.
