You can compress files but i never found out how. It's what the ipod does. You've got a gigabyte of music on disc and it manages to compress it down to around 150mb.
On Nero, have you tried putting the music on as data, instead of music?

sony sonic stage. download it off of limwire, otherwise it comes with any of their cd players that play ATRAC3 cd's. that will put almost 500 songs on one 80 min/70mb cd. although you do have to have the special cd player for them...the cd player will show you track names and you can search between albums and everything. just like an mp3 player, just, its using the cd as the harddrive. the files are supercompressed, but they still have excellent sound quality.
