Mr Tom Petty
I actually have no idea why I'm making this. I just haven't seen anything about this fella and was wondering what everyone thought of him and his band the Heartbreakers.
I personally like him, I find he has a great voice and a cool cool rock band. |
tom petty and the heartbreakers. i wouldnt list them as one of my favorites, but i have the greatest hits album and there's a good bunch of songs i love on there. "something's in the air" has been a favorite song of mine since i heard it on the osiris skate video in 2003
|
Does he have a lyric "keep on keeping on"? I know its in Dylans Tangled up in blue but I need to find oout what song this is. I'm loosing my mind.
|
One of my top-five favorite bands, actually.
The Running Down A Dream doc is spellbinding. |
Tom Petty is so awesome , I love driving along and singing his music

I Won't Back Down is one of my theme songs. |
Freefallin' what a tune
he's playing the halftime show for the superbowl in january i have him and the heartbreakers best of not a dud track on there |
He has done some great tracks-REFUGEE, MARY JANE'S LAST DANCE, BREAKDOWN ETC. Good solid rock tunes. I can't say I listen to him a great deal though.
|
he is a good listen from time to time, he has the kind of music that will lift your spirits. hey is it me or is the video for Mary Janes Last Dance kind you know, creepy.
half-time show is going to be good this year, no more Rolling Stones, now they wont have to reanimate the bodies |
I think he is the guy who makes the songs that you randomly hear on the radio and have to crank it really loud and sing along with all your friends.....saying that I have most of his cds I hardly put them on but there on my play lists
|
He is what the Byrds could have been if they hadn't broken up. I love me some TP.
|
Listening to a really great boot from the 06 tour.
Man, I wish I'd had the money at the time to check that out. |
BTW...he was incredible at the Superbowl halftime show. I've never seen anyone that is so comfortable and confident on stage.

Into the Great Wide Open's a very good album and, I don't care what anyone says, Free Fallin' is immense! His work with the Traveling Wilburys aside, I don't listen to much more of his stuff though.
|
Most of Tom Petty's stuff is pretty good, including the Traveling Wilburys and Mudcrutch, but his best work was the voice of "Lucky" on King of the Hill.
|
I also got Free Fallin', but it came out a little fuzzy.
|
I watched him on TV last week and realized that I hate his music just about as much as I hate his 'Bob Dylan' sounding voice.
I will admit though, I love to drink beer with my friends and see who can do the best imitation of Petty's voice, while his music is playing over the stereo. There are always a couple of (drunk) idiots willing to give it their best shot. |
Tom Petty is a notch or two above the grating vocals of Bob Dylan imo. I love the song (and video for) ''Don't Come Around Here No More''. Too bad the girl in that video killed herself...and Tommy was too petty to go to the funeral. :'(
|
the only song i'm aware of is american girl, with the heartbreakers. i love that tune though.
|
Tom Petty is awesome... He has a TON of hits over decades of times. Too many good songs to even mention, I'll just start rambling. Just such a mellow, stoner rocker. Awesome tunes.

Okay, I agree his voice isn't conventionally nice. But don't you like the kind of serious undertone in some of the songs? And there is a lot in them musically! My Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tape used to keep me alive back in the 90s when I had to drive for 12 hours across Nebraska. His music...and the wind in my face...helped keep me from falling asleep! Quote:
Mmmm. I love the guitars. And the lyrics interest me. I could listen to this song again and again. And you can do exactly that when you are driving across Nebraska! I also like "You got lucky." I like how it transitions from minor to major to give the feeling of the song. Again, I really like the guitar playing, both the rhythm guitar and the solo guitar. I feel the song has a lot of variety despite heavy repetition. I like listening to the percussion's details, for example, and the overlap of different rhythms that merge together so nicely in the song. Honorable mentions are also "Free Fallin'," "Don't come around here no more," and "I won't back down." Aww, shoot, I'll go ahead and post "Don't come around here no more," since Downwardspiral says he's not aware of any Petty songs besides "American Girl," and since, like Goblin Tears, I always loved this song with its twangy notes, the echo of the percussion, and the buildup to the "Heys." The song has a great feeling of rushing to me. I like the slight changes that occur throughout the song; it evolves, even as it stays the same. I like how the song feels slow but also excited, especially near the end when the beat picks up. The lyrics are a bit simple, but, hey! Sometimes I get chills during the "Heys," and I like that more than complex lyrics, I guess. I admit Tom Petty's voice is an acquired taste! But I've acquired it. :D |
...I'm a big Tom Petty fan...solo...with The Heartbreakers...(Mike Campbell is a very under-rated guitarist)...and Traveling Wilburys...
I crank up Into the Great Wide Open when I'm cooking... his videos are masterpieces on their own... Into the Great Wide Open ------- this concert dvd...High Grass Dogs...Live From The Fillmore...is one of my favourites...his harmonies with Howie Epstein (RIP)...were beautiful... Walls Angel Dream I dreamed You...I saw Your Face... ...caught my lifeline...when drifting through space I saw an Angel...I saw my fate... ...I can only thank God...it was not too late |
Wow Petty hate? Wouldn't have guessed...
Into the Great Wide Open is my favorite Petty track. Put that one on repeat for a while... But there are many. When I listen to Tom Petty, I can listen to him for a few hours. Great discography, more or less. Another great is Last Dance with Mary Jane |
Obviously a fan of the Man and the Band..
Have attended over 30 concerts of his and NEVER get tired of seeing him live. Despite his and their hardships, they have managed to keep it real and not just put out garbage for the sake of doing so. If you have never seen Petty live out on a warm summers night, I suggest you grab a pair of tickets next time he comes to town. If you caught any of the shows in 2010, you know what I'm talking about. All around great longevity and true solid tunes. For those of you that love their greatest hits, I would suggest looking into those albums, becuase there are certainly other jems you haven't heard yet. |
