I probably won't be able to remember all of them right now, but I'll start with the ones I can recall:
Jethro Tull (1975) Bob Dylan (1978) The Breeders (1993) Guided By Voice/The Amps (1996)--second sell out show with a band with Kim Deal Loudon Wainwright III (1997 or 1998) Even though the GBV/The Amps show was sold out and I didn't get tickets in advance, I knew one of the promoters who let my friend and me in. The Wainwright show wasn't officially a sellout in advance but sold out at the door not long before show time. Hope they didn't have to turn too many people away. |

I don't know if this show sold out, but I was one of the many fans at the Kenny Chesney concert back in 2003 when he played Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, TN. At least 60,000 people including me of course were in the seats.

I never kept track of all the sold out shows I attended. Two that do stand out at the moment were The Jam during their final tour and David Bowie when he played a show in a 600 capacity club sometime back in the 90's (can't remember the exact date offhand). The Jam stands out because I bought the last 2 tickets available at the box office and sold it out. The Bowie show stands out because it was in a 600 capacity venue and I ended up standing several feet away, directly in front of him for the entire show.

There were probably a dozen of us waiting on the sidewalk outside the Beachland Ballroom. It was about 4PM and the reason we were waiting was for the doors to open for an Ian Hunter show. The doors wouldn’t open until 7 but this is a GA venue.
An image appears behind the heavy glass doors and a handwritten message was taped to the glass, “Ian Hunter Sold Out”. Fun memory shared mostly with members of the now defunct Ian Hunter messageboard.

A couple more that I just thought of, both of which I saw at the same club that I saw Bowie, were Johnny Cash and Soundgarden. There was a winter blizzard on the night of the Johnny Cash show and it was already snowing when I started driving to the show. I got within 5 miles of the venue and the snow was coming down so hard that I decided to park at the nearest subway station and take a train the rest of the way. When I got to the venue, the tour bus was parked outside so I knew the show wouldn't be cancelled. I figured a lot of people would probably stay home and the show would be sparsely attended but by the time the show started the place was packed. I think everyone who bought a ticket showed up despite the blizzard.
The Soundgarden show is memorable because it was just before they became hugely popular and made it big and started playing large venues like arenas and stadiums. |
