Waylon Jennings, Charlie Pride, Merle Haggard and even himself. I can't count the number of times I've heard this song in bars and glad I don't remember all the times I sang along while in such bars.

Another Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show song. This one mentions Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Dr. John, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger:

Randy posted a song about Elvis, Holly posted a song about Merle Haggard, so here's one by Merle Haggard about Elvis. I don't think it's one of Merle's best tunes but it does fit the topic:

Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Ian Dury, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Sid Vicious, Paul Cook, & Johnny Rotten are all mentioned in this one...
Sex Pistols - The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle Very unflattering commentary on all those mentioned in the song. Not sure why Steve Jones and Glen Matlock didn't get mentioned along with the other 3 members of the Sex Pistols but they were probably relieved by the omission. |

I just remembered the ultimate name-dropping song.
Johnny Cash, Duane Eddie, Roy Orbison, Johnny Rivers, Marty Robbins, Buck Owens, Merle Travis, Merle Haggard, Bob Wills, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Link Wray, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Freddie King, B.B. King, Albert King, Ben E. King, Carole King, Billie Jean King, Don King, Claude King, Pee Wee King, Elvis Presley, Cream, Deep Purple, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Sex Pistols, Jimi Hendrix. I might've missed a couple but here it is... Bill Kirchen - Hot Rod Lincoln (Live) I've gone to see him play live a few times, and I've seen him play this song at every show I've been to, and he usually also mentions Iggy Pop & The Stooges (Bill and Iggy were actually classmates in high school) but he didn't mention him here. If there's another song that references more people, I don't think I've ever heard it. |

Whew! I'm not even going to try to match that Kirchen tune for number of musos mentioned! Instead, I'll go with Loudon Wainwright III's song Red Guitar (only instrument on the song: piano) which mentions Kate McGarrigle, his wife at the time, and:
"Used to have a red guitar/til I smashed it one drunk night/smashed in the classic form/as Peter Townshend might" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmpI...&start_radio=1 |
