Drive-By Truckers - Let There Be Rock

While I don't think Graham Parker was trying to one up Drive By Truckers, the following seasonal tune (with Nona Hendryx as guest vocalist) mentions Sam and Dave, James Brown, Mary Wells, Eddie Floyd, all four members of the classic Booker T. & The MGs lineup, Sam Cooke, Carla Thomas, Otis Redding, Don Covay, Al Green, Junior Walker, and Aretha Franklin.

Those two have been married since July 8, 1997 and Connie is seventeen years older than him.

Right here is a quote from Marty that I found on his Wikipedia page:

"I met Connie when I was 12 years old. She came to the Indian reservation in my hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi, to work at a fair. She hasn't changed a bit. She looked great then and she looks great now." Stuart said he told his mother then that he was going to marry Connie Smith. Smith explains how they have sustained their marriage: "Make the Lord the center ... and commit."

God bless you and them and Mason always!!!

Holly

P.S. I can't agree more with what Connie has to say about marriage.

I knew the Marty/Connie story in general, but not all the details. Merry Christmas, Holly!

Another well-known one from the 70's. Frank Zappa and the Mothers, and the Rolling Stones, both get mentioned in the lyrics...

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water

Yeah, Smoke On The Water is well known but it fits the thread so it's totally cool to post it.

Hank Williams.Jr. and Waylon Jennings - The Conversation

About Hank Jr.'s father, the original Hank Williams. It seems like at least half of Jr.'s songs are about him.

Here's another one with multiple bands and performers. The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, The Who, Hugh Masekela, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones...

Monterey - Eric Burdon & The Animals (with Lyrics)

The Woodstock Music and Art Fair gets most of the attention for the late 60's music festivals but for my money, the Monterey International Pop Festival was the one I would've attended if I'd been able to back in those days.

Kris Kristofferson - Blame It On the Stones

Mister Marvin Middle Class is really in a stew
Wonderin' what the younger generation's coming to
And the taste of his martini doesn't please his bitter tongue
Blame it on the Rolling Stones

7 or 8 years ago, I came across a DVD of a live show of theirs from 1974 and bought it out of curiosity. I never cared for the soft-rock/pop music they started putting out from the mid 70's onward but since this show predated all that, I figured I'd take a chance on it. Glad I did because it turned out to be a fantastic performance by the band and has become one of my all-time favorite live performances ever captured on video by any band. And to top it off, the two frontmen for the group appear to be as high as kites throughout the entire show but still manage to deliver a thoroughly entertaining performance.

Here's the song you mentioned, performed live from that show...

Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show - Roland The Roadie And Gertrude The Groupie

You'll have to click on the link to watch it, though.
