Song 6

I beg to differ: it is difficult for me to fail to remember just before tonight
Your countenance on departure
However, I suppose it is how the tale proceeds
Ever you grin, however sadness is evident in your eyes.
It's evident, indeed.
I must disagree, I have difficulty trying not to recall the ensuing day
On contemplating the totality of my sadness
As I retained you but afterwards had to release my hold upon you
And at this point it is only equitable that I inform you
That of which you should already be aware.

Harry Nilsson - "Without You"

The telling lines (for me) in bold above: "But I guess that's just the way the story goes / You always smile, but in your eyes your sorrow shows / Yes, it shows."

Beat me to it!

My guess was Harry Nilsson, who recorded the song, but I don't know if he was the original. I won't google!

My guess was The Hollies - but I don't know if Jimmy Webb also recorded it!

Haha! yes those words in "Without you" were the clincher for me too.
You're probably right with songs 5 and 6 I'm not very good with artists.

Correct x 2. The Monkees song was written by Neil Diamond, in case you care.

Close but not quite. "He Ain't Heavy" was made famous and recorded by The Hollies indeed. "Without You" is not written by, but made famous by Harry Nilsson. Was actually written by guys from the band (snigger) Badfinger.

It's actually a song by the band Bandfinger, the first band signed and released by The Beatles' Apple Records.

They're amazing in their own right, one of my favorites actually (especially their first album).

Songs like "Carry On Until Tomorrow" or "Fisherman" are just mind-blowingly good.

Fantastic entry into the Beatle-rock genre.

"Without You" was one of their only charting hits songs if I remember correctly.

Without You didn't chart for Badfinger, at least not in the US. That would have to wait for Nilsson's rendition when it would become a monster hit for him.

The single that came off No Dice (Badfinger's second LP and the one that featured Without You) was No Matter What. That ended up on Billboard's Top Ten peaking at number eight. Not so bad.

Oh, well, too bad for them. These guys really didn't deserve all that had happened to them.

I mean, such a great band, and with such promise, and starting your career by being buddies with the Beatles, McCartney producing a couple of their songs, playing on All Things Must Pass, with a really talented songwriter at the helm and all.

When I discovered them a couple of years back, I just couldn't believe what I'm hearing and it's only this year that I got to know their history.

Had an inkling but looked it up to make sure. I forgot what a good 1980 song this was/is.
