How many tabs do you have open right now and what are they?

Well?

(whoever has the most tabs open...wins, I guess)

1. My ADD is exhibited in the fact that I also have a book open, and instagram is there. My normal routine is about 10-15 minutes on any thing before I switch. Unless I'm investigating something deeply, in which case I can have a dozen tabs open and spend an hour focused on it.

Lisnaholic 12-20-2020 05:49 AM

TBH, when I sit at my computer, I routinely open 3: YouTube, MusicBanter and CNN news. If I later move on to work-related stuff, I close those ones down, because I don't like to overload my brain or my computer.
Right now, I also have a google images tab open, as I've just posted a photo in the Architecture thread.

How are you people powerful enough to manage so many tabs, when I open more than 5 the chaos breaks loose in my head and I get stressed.

When I'm not working I usually have musicbanter and youtube, the rest varies, Wikipedia pages or Google Street View or stuff like that

adidasss 12-20-2020 08:38 AM

^^ Agreed. Having more than 4-5 tabs open to read is just impractical, anything more than that and I just give up. I'm not used to spending hours reading long articles. The only time I have a dozen or more tabs open is when I'm on a porn binge and scouring the internet for just the right video (because that obviously doesn't require a lot of brain cells). :/

I'm just a tab packrat who hates closing them. Like I'll just Google something that catches my interest in the moment, not look at it, save it for later, and a month later it's still there.

Doesn’t that show your device down?

*shrug*

I'm still not closing my Socialist Rifle Association tab.

Plankton 12-20-2020 11:35 AM

It all depends on your system resources, but yes you will hit the RAM ceiling eventually if you open enough tabs.

I generally have one tab open set at Google, and then open a few at a time depending on what I'm doing.

I also have a quite large collection of bookmarks for ease of access to the regularly visited and places I like to keep track of.

I usually close out all tabs when I am done. Sometimes I'll have a two dozen open then pair them done the essentials.

I bookmark things all the time, but never find them again cause they're in utter chaos.

In case that's aimed at me, no. I have decent memory and an SSD so things run pretty fast. Plus I recently upgraded to Windows 10.

A breakdown, since the OP asked for it:

I don't think it's actually 64 now that I count them all, but close.

A directory structure with folders for different types of things helps.

The ability to peal one tab away and pull it to it's own window is really helpful when trying to follow an instructional video or tutorial. Not sure if that's just a Chrome thing, but there's also that. That's a tab thing. It's great when you have 2 monitors.

Yeah I have mine all organised, mostly under the "Research" folder, which is then subdivided into things like "History", "Music", TV" "Movies" etc, and subdivisions on. It does make it a whole lot easier instead of paging through a massive long list of unrelated bookmarks. I use Opera, by the way, but I think it's the same basic setup as Chrome.

I do have a bunch of recipe links floating all over the place I need to reorganize. Chrome's Bookmark Manager has similar functionality of Win Explorer, so it's just a Cut/Paste thing but when do I have the time to do all that. lol

Google says there’s going to start deleting your stuff if you’re using too much of their storage.

Plankton 12-20-2020 02:00 PM

I did get that memo. I was actually just looking for my gmail account original signup date, but my emails only go back to 2009 and I signed up around 2002, so either it's cutting off to the data point or the date. Not sure. Bookmarks are minimal specs of data to store. Very much the same as text in a txt file.

Those 'policy changes' have nothing to do with tabs or even bookmarks. Just wanted to point that out.

I was just thinking all the stuff he has on google docs

I have lesson plans and all sorts of teaching documents (maybe no value but you never know) on google docs

I have a ****loads of whatevers on attachments

Pictures and who knows what

Plus just long old emails with friends and ****

If google starts deleting all that it’ll be like losing my journals

Plankton 12-20-2020 05:15 PM

Well, I mean obviously I have multiple backups of all my Google Docs on various media. Plus since I'm a paying customer (I think I get 100 gig storage) they're not going to delete any of my stuff. Online backups too, just in case. Don't want to lose anything.

OccultHawk 12-20-2020 06:59 PM

Cool. Idk wtf I’m gonna do.

I think it’s kind of extortion to offer free storage and then to change their mind.

Go with Dropbox

goldendoodle 12-21-2020 12:11 AM

I actually don't have TOO many tabs open today! Just 9 at the moment, including:

-Slack
-Discord
-Thank You Daddy: The Psychosexual Intimacy of Taskmaster (The Niche blog)
-Gruyere-stuffed loaves recipe (I always bake a lot during the winter months, though I haven't attempted to make bread of any sort before. Made brownies and and a caramel-topped apple cake this weekend)
-Tokusatsu Streaming Guide: Where to Watch Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and More (Den of Geek)
-The Language of Pain: A Philosophical
Study of BDSM

-Pro Ana Meetups of the Early 2000s: What Really Happened (Youtube)
-gizmodo listcle of 6 lesser-known cults

I did it as a safety measure against computer failure, but I guess it can be applied to google storage too: put your stuff into an external hard drive. A bit laborious and the drive itself may cost about 30 US dollars, but then it's safe for eternity and under nobody's control but your own.

Apparently google were caught out by people exploiting their storage with unimagined quantities of material. In a recent press statement they mentioned a user called Trollheart in particular. ;)

While this is a safe method it is by no means for eternity. HDDs break as regularly as anything else. I've had at least four go belly-up on me in the last few years. Of course, if you don't actually use them on a daily basis, just put them away and only hook them up when you need to do backup or restore, they'll last longer. But, as they said in the Cadbury's Creme Eggs ads once, they ain't here forever, Trevor!

I'd definitely recommend an online solution like Dropbox or OneDrive or something, as well as other ideas such as thumb drives and such. Forget about DVDs; over a few years they degrade and most of what you wanted to save will be unreadable by the laser.

No that was Backblaze. They foolishly set no limit, now they're backing up 15 terabytes for me for a paltry six dollars a month!

Plankton 12-21-2020 08:51 AM

I have floppy discs that are safe for eternity, but I don't think the tech to read them will last forever.

Here's a decent read: https://www.computerweekly.com/featu...ure-of-storage
