Japan Kicks Ass!
 

Everyone knows Japan these days for anime, insane game shows, bizarre fashion, and just general pop culture insanity. While it was anime that got me into Japan, just about everything about the culture fascinates me. From anime, to all that pop culture ****, to samurai and the Sengoku period, to ancient Japanese architecture (especially the Shinto temples and Torii gates), to... whatever.

Japan's culture is just so alien due to its historical isolation and distance from the West, while still being a fusion of both due to its occupation by America. Not that I'm pro-America-making-Japan-its-bitch, but it certainly led to an interesting and unique cultural dynamic that contrasts so sharply with their former, downright xenophobic isolationism.

Post favorite Japan ****. Crazy, cool, historical, whatever. This might be in the "Games, Lists, Jokes and Polls" section, but this doesn't have to be totally a joke thread. In that spirit...


As far as specific historical periods go, the Sengoku (Warring States) Period of Japan is one of my all-time fav times. It's like the feudal era of Europe, but if there were no foreign powers around to stop the knight-on-knight carnage. It not only had a beginning and middle, but a climax worthy of the name.

There were some conflicts afterward, but the Battle of Sekigahara would be like if, during the Hundred Years' War, Britain and France waged one final battle to decide who unite all of Europe, and the winner actually did rule over Europe unopposed for several hundred years.

Samurai history is just the ****.

There's a movie on Netflix about that guy and his restaurant that's really fascinating called "Jiro Dreams of Sushi".

That's a pretty good one.

I had a guy working for me in the late 80s-early 90s? who was Japanese and worshiped those guys. He had the huge hair and would dress pretty close to them but a bit tamed down. I gave him guitar lessons for a while but he was a lost cause.

I think my facts may be a little mixed up by years of anime but i don't understand their big brother and big sister fascination



I know Onii chan is older brother
and Onee chan is older sister but i don't get why the titles are so romanticized. it feels incesty for some reason.

Hideo Kojima is Japanese. I will love him 5eva and 5eva for making the MGS games, many hours of fun beating up Sniper Wolf's dogs and sending Otacon pictures of bikini clad babes off the FHM posters :cool:

I don't think I've done this? Where about in the game is this? I can remember nicking Raikov's uniform but not this.

It's been awhile... Remember the old sniper guy boss (and yeah, I think you're right, his name was The End)? If you can sneak around, and find him up in the hills and bushes, you can pull out your tranquilizer thing and hold him up at gunpoint by pointing it at his head. If you can do this a couple times, eventually he gives you an outfit (because why not?).

Also, fun fact, if you screw around too long before confronting him, he eventually dies of old age and you don't have to fight him (seriously). MGS has so much random detail.

And yeah, this also works if you set the PS3 clock a week forward and then go back to the game.

First time I played against The End I didn't know there was a sniper rifle so ended up sneaking up and shooting with the pistol like a div.

Do you know the title of the movie, where a brother and sister are kidnapped and imprisoned in a slave camp. The sister devises a plan for the brother to escape... [spoilers]... At the end of the movie the mother is on the beach calling out her name "Shinobu... Shinobu... Shinobu..." hoping her daughter will return to her.

Chula, I don't know if you were responding to me, but the movie was an old B&W film. I looked up Battle Royale! and I didn't see a character Shinobu.

Is it "Sansho the Bailiff"? Sounds similar to it. The daughter in the movie is named "Anju", but changes her name to "Shinobu".

I hope it's the right movie, and if not then I hope you have good luck tracking the right one down. But it definitely sounds like your mystery movie is at least based off of the same folk story, so that narrows it down a bit.
