Chula, I don't know if you were responding to me, but the movie was an old B&W film. I looked up Battle Royale! and I didn't see a character Shinobu.

Is it "Sansho the Bailiff"? Sounds similar to it. The daughter in the movie is named "Anju", but changes her name to "Shinobu".

I hope it's the right movie, and if not then I hope you have good luck tracking the right one down. But it definitely sounds like your mystery movie is at least based off of the same folk story, so that narrows it down a bit.
