Default The Decade Mixtapes

Recently, I've been uploading a lot of my vinyl and CD's to my computer, and I thought it would be fun to make a mix for each decade. However, instead of just making playlists of my favorite songs from each era, I thought it would be more challenging to try to make mixes that gave the best survey of everything that was going on musically at that point in time. Right now, i'm sticking to a pretty simple format; once I find a genre that I find interesting and influential, I include two songs (one created by a female, and the other by a male) that exemplify it in the mix. Anyway, i'm having fun diving into genres that I know very little about, and I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone else would put in their mixes!

So, first of all, what decade (or decades) would you make a mix for? What genres would you include, and what songs would you use to represent them? And how would you format your mix (one song per genre, some genres left out, etc.)?

90s hiphop. Seperated by west coast, gangster, top hits of 199*, and a Wu-tang mix.

I decided to start with the 1960's. Here's what I've come up with so far...

Rock & Roll - Eddie Cochran (Pink Peg Slacks), Wanda Jackson (Riot in Cell Block Number Nine)

Garage Rock - The Sonics (Money), Denise Kaufman (Boy, What'll You Do Then)

Beat/Freakbeat - The Dave Clark Five (Glad All Over), The McKinleys (Sweet and Tender Romance)

Rocksteady/Ska - Derrick Morgan (The Conquerer), Marcia Griffiths (Feel Like Jumping)

Psychedelic - The Sons of Adam (Feathered Fish), The Ace of Cups (Simplicity)

Folk/Americana - The Byrds (What's Happening?!?!), Joan Baez (Lilly of the West)

Electronic - White Noise (Firebird), Delia Derbyshire (Ziwzih Ziwzih OO-OO-OO)

R & B/Soul - Richard Berry (Have Love, Will Travel), Etta James (In the Basement)

Funk - The Isley Brothers (It's Your Thing), Marlena Shaw (Let's Wade in the Water)

Blues - Muddy Waters (Rollin' and Tumblin', from "After the Rain"), Jo Ann Kelly (Louisiana Blues)

Surf - The Gamblers (Moon Dawg), The Continental Coets (I Don't Love You No More)

It's not a very fleshed out mix, but it's a start. I might add Jazz and Pop/Vocal Pop later on.

Sounds like the basis for a new journal...

I don't really want to make another journal right now . I just thought it would be fun to see what songs/genres everyone would pick to exemplify the different decades.

Also, i'm already starting to second guess all of my picks for the 60's, so i'm probably going to edit it...
