Hitchcock's Rear Window. It didn't rely on a bunch of shock value, just pure suspense, and that made it more scary than any gory slasher film. James Stewart was incredible.
British or American psych?

The Oblong Box, I woke up in the middle of the night and nothing to do but watch a movie. It was scary in the old sense, modern sense of a "scary movie" blood and gore which are really more repulsive than scary.
Psychedelic music or Psych, the TV series?
