Superman appealed more to people that are loners and/or had to move a lot when they were growing up and they could relate more to being a stranger in a new place and having this secret past that you kept from other people. In the early days of Superman when he only had his super strength. He went after wife beaters, rapists and other demented characters and would kill them without thinking twice about it. Only later on in like the 50s is when they gave him the boy scout characteristics and took away his tough and aggressive side.
He might not have mommy and daddy issues but he's not perfect like everyone is trying to make him seem.
He had issues with feeling isolated and alone. With not really feeling like he is part of everyone that is around him until his cousin Supergirl came around and one or two other people but he was very tortured.
The Superman that you are thinking of when he was a communist is a great graphic novel called Superman:Red Son.
Superman has some pretty good graphic novels like Superman: For All Seasons, Earth One and Metropolis.
I love the art work from Metropolis.

How I spent my childhood in snow and all my teens in tow Dj... I have always related to being a stranger in a strange land brother... But Superman was created to give people hope, at a time when all hope was lost.. So I can identify more with Bruce Wayne, as a child, and as an adult, and the longing to change your past through your current actions...
How do you figure he never had parental issues man? He was "adopted" and you think that most adopted children don't struggle with it? Then add on the fact that you happen to be able to throw a tractor around, at some point you have to stop and think **** these ppl can't be my real parents...
That's why I liked Smallville the episodes where he would get all jacked outta his mind on the red kryptonite and he would, rob, ass kick, and just an all around dick... Because his struggle was more apparent, to me...
The struggle in Batmans, heart, soul, reeks in everything he does...Pushing the envelope of restraint on the human body, is apparent, the taking yourself from a man into something better is evident in every page...
Superman was born this way... (Well on our planet he is that way..) He doesn't have to try to be something more then, what he already is... What good is my hero if I can't relate to him?
I know, it's called Red Son silly goose... I said that already...
