Another Alan Moore venture I'd recommend taking is his run at the British Superman/ Captain Marvel knock off Marvelman, or Miracleman if your country is fat. It's pretty much ground zero for his ideas found in later comics like Watchmen.

His run on Swamp Thing was really good as well.

Batman all the way, I am gonna answer honestly as Batman is my all time favorite characters and up until the Chris Nolan movies he got the shaft... He is the man, there isn't anything he can't do with the right amount of cash, and ingenuity..Which makes him completely more accessible to common man,he is also deep rooted in revenge and that like it or lump it it is in everyone of our makeups as human beings...

Superman would be amazing if he actually spoke to the darkest parts of my psyche, but unfortunately it is all sunshine, rainbows, do-goody bull****, and red underpants...
All though a few years back they put out an else world series of Superman as a communist, that was pretty sick...Red Son.... But as my super hero no, I want one just as flawed and ****ed in the head as I am thank you very much....

I voted for Batman as well mostly because I'm sick of Superman and his origin story being told over and over again but Superman is getting raked over the coals unfairly so I'm going to make a case for him.

Superman appealed more to people that are loners and/or had to move a lot when they were growing up and they could relate more to being a stranger in a new place and having this secret past that you kept from other people. In the early days of Superman when he only had his super strength. He went after wife beaters, rapists and other demented characters and would kill them without thinking twice about it. Only later on in like the 50s is when they gave him the boy scout characteristics and took away his tough and aggressive side.

He might not have mommy and daddy issues but he's not perfect like everyone is trying to make him seem.

He had issues with feeling isolated and alone. With not really feeling like he is part of everyone that is around him until his cousin Supergirl came around and one or two other people but he was very tortured.

The Superman that you are thinking of when he was a communist is a great graphic novel called Superman:Red Son.

Superman has some pretty good graphic novels like Superman: For All Seasons, Earth One and Metropolis.

I love the art work from Metropolis.

Already read Watchman, and yes it's fantastic. I don't know why you have anything against the movie though. The only thing really wrong with it was that faithfully adapting a serialized comic book of connected but still separate parts into a movie can make the whole thing seem to meander without any real direction. It made V for Vendetta almost unwatchable, but Watchman managed to do it well. And that's saying something for an almost three-hour movie.

Don't necessarily have anything against the movie, but I hate the way they completely changed the ending. Made less sense, though they did at least keep the end scene where
Spoiler for In case you haven't read the book/seen the movie:
Rorschach's journal is delivered and the whole story is about to be blown...

Oh and Batty? Don't forget Dredd...

Most of the other 2000AD graphic novels are great too, like Strontium Dog, Slaine and Halo Jones...

they needed to completely change the ending because it wouldn't translate well to film.

I agree with their decision to do so.

Bollocks. There's no reason why it wouldn't have worked. Just lazy.

Yeah. He arrived on Earth with only fourteen Krypto-dollars and a dream to run his own chain of dry-cleaning shops. Today he's one of the ten richest men in America.

Only in the US of A!

I found a really great explanation why through googling just now and it makes sense.

The most important part of it is the run time would have to be longer than it already is to properly set up and explain what was going on

Spoiler for Spoilerzzz:
Running Time - adding in the explanations of the psychic squid and Vaught's teleportation machine would have made the movie run much longer. It was already at the maximum running length most people would sit through.
Characters - The island and its inhabitants were able to be entirely cut from the movie by eliminating the psychic squid. Adding them in would have increased the number of characters significantly and added more subplots.
Visual effects - Text is easy to use in comics to explain what's happening. But you can't show a psychic shock on the screen, you can't display the years of nightmares people were described as having afterwards. Explosions, though, are pretty and very visible.
Tales of the Black Freighter - This subplot, which confused several readers of the comic, was connected only to people on the island (and one child who played only a small part in the movie/comics), and could thus be eliminated by eliminating the psychic squid.
