Total bollox. USA is not the world, and the only reason the "best players in the world" play there is that it's played nowhere else. Your argument is a paper tiger pal. By that spurious logic we could call the hurling championships a world series, but we dont: it's the All-Ireland final, cos that's the only place it's played.

Arguably the closest, but the average amount of goals/points or whatever scored in a game would still be more.
Then again, people might prefer games with more points/goals, even if the level of excitement per point isn't as huge due to the amount.

I'm sorry, but football, although fun to play and good to watch, is not the only sport in existence. That's the impression that I get from this thread. |

The question I asked was to challenge the 'cultural ties' that you stated earlier. For example the USA and especially Canada have far greater cultural ties to the UK than Argentina ever could. So based on the logic that you've applied with the wiki example, football should be far more popular in North America than it actually is, that would also be further enforced by the huge amount of immigration into the USA from countries where football is the biggest sport, because immigrants by and large dictate the future development of a society. It's not that I disagree about the cultural link to the popularity of sports in a country, but in this aspect I think that USA and Canada are an anomaly in regards of this.

I am aware other sports exist, and enjoy many of them, but Football is simply the best sport I have ever watched.
