Okay, move on. No-one's answered. The one-hour rule is in effect again. Someone --- anyone --- post a question within an hour or I will.

Trollheart 02-10-2013 11:55 AM

Ok then, up to me: who painted this?

Meshes of the Afternoon, I believe.

Who was the Native American that traveled with Lewis and Clark on their fabled expedition?

duga 02-10-2013 06:45 PM

Sacajawea

What is biology's central dogma?

From what I remember it says that information flows in one direction only, DNA => RNA => proteins. And I think the RNA is actually mRNA. I know that Francis Crick came up with the term anyhow.

Trollheart 02-10-2013 07:26 PM

Holy crap! Is this University Challenge?? General knowledge, people: general. That means that within reason most people should have a decent idea of the answer. "The dogma in biology?" What has a dog's mother got to do with it? ;)

Seriously, let's give us numbskulls a chance here, poindexters! :)

Burning Down 02-10-2013 07:29 PM

lol! Crick used the term dogma in the wrong sense, I guess he didn't know what it meant. I can't be 100% sure that my answer's right though so I'll hold off on my question until it's confirmed.

Paedantic Basterd 02-10-2013 07:30 PM

Reverse transcriptase actually causes DNA to be generated from an RNA strand, and is the method by which the HIV virus reproduces itself.

I think that's only in exceptional cases though... DNA isn't normally generated from RNA, it's the other way around.

gunnels 02-10-2013 07:36 PM

Changes in allele frequencies over time due to natural selection and reproductive success results in the evolution of species?

Right, I was just offering the random trivia that there is an enzyme which reverses the process.

I'm not sure how to answer the original question, just because it strikes me as vague.

Haha sorry guys... This was right.

And chill Trollheart... I learned this in my freshman bio course. If it's not general knowledge it should be. Just like the basis of evolution.

No apologies for a lame high school biology education.

Burning Down 02-10-2013 09:14 PM

Yeah! Okay then - which French explorer established the first European colony in Canada in 1605?

gunnels 02-10-2013 09:21 PM

François l'Cânades.

Yeah well I didn't finish school. Left at 17 to begin a working life. Not everyone went to college. Just sayin'. As long as someone can get the answers, fine. I just expected more along the lines of "what's the capital of Paris?" :D

Yer all bleedin' scientists and eggheads, int'cha? ;)

It's okay! Don't worry about it. The central biology dogma and protein synthesis is something that we learn in high school biology class over here (well Canada and US at least), but unless you continued with biology, it's a hard thing to recall. I had to think back all the way to grade 10 bio! :D

misspoptart 02-11-2013 07:46 AM

Sir Francis Drake?

Trollheart 02-13-2013 09:44 AM

Time for another question then. Try this one:

GEEK ALERT!

What's the designation of the USS Enterprise (either one?) in "Star Trek" (any series). Hah! Gotchas there, didn't I? ;)

Plankton 02-13-2013 09:52 AM

To boldly go where no man has gone before.

Burning Down 02-13-2013 10:22 AM

Oh I'm sorry! The answer to my question is Samuel de Champlain.

You are. Welcome, brother! Come join the cosmic ballet!
Seriously though, if you were a REAL nerd you would've said this:
NCC-1701 for "classic Trek"
NCC-1701A for first movie
NCC-1701D for Next Gen
NCC-1701E for Generations

and you'd also have mentioned that NCC stands for Naval Construction Class.
BOOM! You've just been nerdslapped! :bringit:

So, your turn then...

duga 02-13-2013 01:24 PM

I thought about that but I felt that would kick the nerdiness up a bit too much.

So I won't go the science route this time.

What is Kramer's first name?

Kramer vs Kramer or Seinfeld?

Cosmo or Ted.

If I could award bonus points, I would. But...of course...I meant Seinfeld's Kramer. You're up.

I thought it meant Nipple Construction Class because the design of the original ship was inspired by one so all the nerds would continue to tune in and guarantee the show would not be dropped after the first season.

Trollheart 02-13-2013 07:10 PM

Good point, though of course it WAS dropped after the second season, just barely got a third and then got syndicated, and nerdistory (nerd history) was made!

My bad guys.

Who invented the first blender in 1922?

Trollheart 02-15-2013 01:24 PM

No-one knows Fred. Can you tell us the answer? Meanwhile...

Who wrote "The rime of the Ancient Mariner"? (You Maiden fans should know this one...)

Stephen Papalski.

I'll leave the Maiden answer for someone else even though I know the answer.

Damn it, damn it, damn it...Samuel Taylor Coleridge!!! Got that ****!

What is the 13th Zodiac sign?

Trollheart 02-17-2013 05:13 AM

Aren't there only twelve? Well, looks like nobody knows Your Batship.
I'll throw another one in to restart the ball on its journey:

How many sides had a dodecahedron?

(Man I need a holiday!)

Trollheart 02-17-2013 07:23 PM

Seriously? No-one knows this?

Lisnaholic 02-17-2013 07:42 PM
