PC or Mac?

mac OS 10.2 is pretty unuseable now.
It supports a lot less than Windows 2000. It looks more modern, but it has the same amount of limitations that windows '98 now has. So you can still work with it, but it's really getting old. Bare in mind, Mac OS 10.2 is from 2002. So that's the Windows XP era.
Then you have Mac os 8.6 which is from 1997. This is about as unuseable as Windows 3.11, except that you can get it to work on the internet properly, if it weren't for the old browser.

To give you an idea; Everyone uses Safari on a Mac now. And that's fine, it's a great browser. But Safari was only available since Mac OS 10.3 (2003) and you can only upgrade to the last version of safari if you use Mac OS from 2007. So if you want to use safari you will have to have an OS that dates from the time of Windows 7. Not older. And to think that 11 year old Windows 2000 still runs Firefox 4.0...

And remember that annoying little program, Quicktime? It always has to be cracked to work completely on a PC, right? Remember? Right. It is from apple, so you can be sure it comes with Mac OS. And obviously it's completely working there, much like Windows Media Player. But then it isn't. It's just as limited. It has all these grayed out buttons it has in Windows. That's just awful. So your default video player you get with your system has to be activated and it isn't free. Good thing: The windows key works just fine on a mac

Eitherway, to answer your question; If I had to use a Mac, I wouldn't want to work with one that wouldn't run at least Mac OS 10.5. So that's a 3,5 year old system. Windows XP is now 9 years old and with SP3 installed it still runs beautifully. At least that's what I think. So yes, Mac software does get old VERY quickly.

I knew about Mac's design and whatnot, but it was really interesting to read about how they design their stores. It's crazy. Nothing goes undesigned.

Well there's a lot of PC hardware that also works in a mac. The powerPC's also used to do AGP and PCI and I'm sure they do PCIe and such now.
The hardware is quite allright, the software well... There's a lot of people that really should buy a mac. People who click every pop up and link in their e-mail, they're a lot safer. About that Warranty; I used to own an iMac G5. Beautiful running machine with a brilliant screen. I bought it back then to test if I would be able to get used to Apples.
Well it had 512MB of memory and I upgraded it to 2GB.

You take of the whole back and the stand it's on with only a couple of screws. Remove it and you'll see:

Very nice. The memory is next to the G5 thingy.
You just take it out, put in two modules of 1GB, close the lid, screws, ready.
Very convenient and it's a beautifully built machine.

So when I tried to sell it as it can't run windows yet (...) I got the most stupid questions about warranty (it was 5 years old then), whether it was grey (I put pictures up there!), if it had a webcam, what serial number it had (didn't have any, used to belong to a co worker of Apple Ireland)...
But the question I got most was "Did you go to an official Apple dealer to upgrade the memory". As soon as I had to reply 'no', they lost their interest.

You'll understand that this made me very, very angry.
I cannot believe how ignorant and plain stupid people are. They just don't see that every company wants to make money. And Apple doesn't mind to make a little bit more. Don't believe everything you're told people...

That seems like an odd comparison to make. Shouldn't you either compare Firefox to itself in both platforms or compare Safari to IE?

Well it comes with Safari as standard but you cannot upgrade it to the latest version altough your computer is well capable of it.
As far as IE goes: I've always hated IE. So you may have a point there.
I just searched a bit and found out that IE is now not for Windows XP anymore. But bare in mind: That's a 9,5 year old OS.
The newest versions of safari won't run on a 4,5 year old OS.
Also, Windows doesn't come with IE as standard anymore. Which is good. The only thing I used IE for is for downloading Firefox

See, that's a huge concern for me, because I use my computer for a lot of things that are constantly updated and changing, and I need my computer to keep up. I'm still using XP with SP3, and it runs great. The main reason I'm even upgrading to Windows 7 64bit with my new system is because I want the RAM benefits, and XP's 64 bit version had a lot of issues, especially with software I personally use.
I'm thinking of doing a dual-boot with another drive to hold XP 32 bit, but I'll wait and see if Win7 64 has any issues with XP era stuff I still use.

As far as PC is concerned, 64 bit is already mainstream and everything is going to eventually go that way, with programs being written for 64 bit architecture, and I want to be able to take advantage of that.
I'm the kind of guy that really likes to stay reasonably on top of technology, because most of what I do, and even my career, requires it.

Glad I went PC all those years ago.

Well I've heard that Steve Jobs named his company Apple because he's a Beatles fan and of course, they had Apple Records. Some copyright infringement lawsuits soon followed but were resolved.

I wonder if that ever had anything to do with the Beatles music not being on iTunes for so long?

The question remains though: how old a Mac will run Firefox? I'm guessing it won't go as far back as with Windows since I doubt it would work with MacOS 9, but I'm kind of curious.

Had to google that as I didn't know.
I've never liked using Firefox on a mac by the way, always a bit sluggish compared to Chrome and especially Safari. But should you want to use the latest firefox (4) you will have to use Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6.
