Let me put it another way, I was born in Manchester.

I had no choice, but I'm damn proud of this city and I won't ever have a bad word spoken of it, yet I didn't earn the right to live here, I was born here through no choice of my own.

I don't know why you think you can't be proud of the things you didn't choose or earn, like the place you were born or your sexuality or whatever else.

That's a good example, because it's exactly like sexuality. You had no influence on where you were born. You could have been born in New York, you could have been born in Beirut, or you could have been born in Manchester. In any case, you would have been born.

That being said, why be proud of the city you were born in? What are your reasons? You didn't contribute to its "greatness" in any way. You didn't found it, help construct it, influence it, or have anything to do with it at all. (Aside from simply existing in it, of course.) Same with having pride in being English. Or any kind of nationalism at all. George Washington had plenty of reasons to be prideful in being American, but I certainly don't. I could be grateful that I was born here, sure, but that is not pride.

Because you have no REASON to be proud.

Who's to say I don't contribute to the city? Even if it's only in a small way, something to help the community.

I think you can be proud of something that gives you great satisfaction, great happiness, great pleasure.

Like my football team, I'm proud of the club. I don't think the only things you can take pride in, are the things you earned.

Or, you can be proud of your sexuality for the amount of work you put in - you might be a massive slut getting rogered left right and centre!

I won't change my mind, but you certainly raised some interesting points and made me think about a simple word such as pride.

Then you're welcome to be proud of the small way that you've impacted your city.

Sure you can, if you have reason for that pride. Lots of things bring us pleasure or satisfaction. I enjoy eating cake, so does that mean I should be proud of cake in general?

You can be proud of your football team because you directly participate in it and influence the level of satisfaction or pleasure that it brings you.

Why? You (or anyone) has yet to give me reasons for pride in a non-accomplishment. "Because it brings me satisfaction" is not a REASON for pride, it's simply a reason why thing X is good.

Working at getting laid can be a source of pride, but that's independent of your sexuality. Gay Bob and Straight John are both proud of their ability to get laid. They work at it, but it has nothing to do with which way they swing.

Alright, we'll I've beaten the point to death so I suppose I should stop typing as well.

I'm proud that I'm a white, middle class heterosexual from a safe western country.

Suddenly I am an asshole right?

No, you're simply misunderstanding what pride means.

Your pride doesn't always have to be in your accomplishments, though.

I like men, and yeah, I'm pretty damn proud of my sexuality. Why?
Because it exists. And I'd rather be open about it than hide it away like some people often do, regardless of their orientation.

Besides, have you ever noticed how sexuality is perceived to be one of two extremes most of the time? You're always either a prude or a nympho.

Only for describing a country that's in the east as "western".
