And, I *did* then ask what Vanilla prefers to be called, since you raised the important point that it is good to call someone what she wants to be called. Vanilla answered, "Not a girl, not yet a woman." So she feels in-between. She then asked my opinion about whether I think women call themselves girls because of their feelings about their maturity level, and so I posted my opinion to answer her question. Quote:
And, hey...aren't *you* now saying what you think Vanilla should be annoyed by, and isn't that the very thing you accused me of? Maybe she finds it annoying or thought-provoking or entertaining to see what has happened in the thread she started. I don't know.

Not really because I never suggested she should feel any certain way.
Besides, I said if it was me I would be annoyed. And you have to admit it's not the first time you've come charging in and making assumptions about how people should feel. Plus I never claim to speak for anybody else other than myself, let alone a whole gender like you do sometimes.

Earlier in this thread I wrote: "How women feel about calling themselves or being called 'girl' certainly depends on the woman in question, boo boo." I also wrote, "To me, calling a woman 'girl' feels somewhat dismissive." I feel you are accusing me unfairly, Urban! I shall now cry! (Note: I am not REALLY crying. In reality, I have to urinate!)

I am not annoyed by the truth that men and women are different from each other. Biological body differences are obvious. What I wondered about is whether you feel women's life experiences don't translate so well into stand-up comedy. I don't see any reason why this might be true. I'm trying to figure out why many people may not view women's humor as so funny, if that really is the case. For example, when I watch women comedians, I usually relate very well to their humor, because I've often been in situations similar to theirs. When I watch the video I posted earlier by the man Louis CK about "Women vs. Girls," I also relate to much of what he says, because I've seen some of what he says, and thought many of the same things. Did you watch those two videos? I think they're both funny because they are a mixture of stereotypes (about men *and* women) and truth! Here is the Louis CK one again:

With the "girl" issue, people may not be aware of the whole history of the use of this word beyond their own experience. So, learning about this history, if they didn't know it already, may give them a different perspective. The terminology people use to refer to women may be one small thing that helps cause some people to not value women as much as men, contributing to problems like lower wages for women. Some people feel fine being called "girls." Some don't. If you look over in the "words you hate" thread, you'll see I'm not the only one who feels uncomfortable with adult women being called girls. Even if it is true that a lot of people feel comfortable with some practice, I am not assured that there are no problems with it, especially when I see reasons the practice could be harmful. To me, calling adult women a word, "girl," originally intended to mean children, is a red flag. And so I give my viewpoint...even if it may be a minority opinion. You can call me girl if you want to, though, Urban, because I don't think you mean anything bad by it.

I think the real issue here is we need a good female equivalent of the word "guy". "Gal" is too stupid of a word to work. But "woman" is too stiff, much like "men". I never call males "men" because it just sounds ridiculous ("Be back later hon, I'm going out for a couple drinks with the men.") and I wish I didn't have to choose between overly formal ("women") and offensive ("girls") when I refer to females.

"Ladies", but with a playful tone?
Oh, and isn't the only possible answer to this question "Yes" or "No"?

Everyone has met at least 1 funny female, therefore they CAN be funny. Although men are generally a lot lot funnier, so I voted no. Just to mix things up a bit! But of course they can be funny, I guess if the thread was Can men be funny? The answer would be depends on the man/sometimes. Same in this thread, sometimes they can. Depends who they are. |
